The Mists are halted at Ten Towns, making it the last bastion of humanity.
As it is known that nothing passes through the mists thus communication and transport have become a thing of the past. Yet something halts the Mist from further reaching inwards on Icewind Dale. Hence the final known bastion of humanity resides there, in Ten Towns.
