Paladin

Paladins are human mortals born with the ability to detect certain supernatural beings, and specific abilities they can manifest, which are usually useful in fighting them.

Heroes, Saints, Slayers

Due to the nature of the abilities innate to the Paladins, it seems like their role in life is to fight the type of creature they are uniquely able to sense. Historically, many mythical heroes and great names of the past are named as having slain beasts and monsters fair beyond that which regular humans could face. Often enough these men of the past will be described as possessing unnatural gifts. The rage of Cuchulainn, the strength of Hercules, the Sword of Arthur. There are those who believe that, at least in some stances, these stories are describing Paladins of the past. Whatever the truth is, it's clear that Paladins are uniquely qualified, by their gifts, to fight the Vampyr, stand the spells of witches and other feats of similar nature.
The origin of these powers is unclear, but Paladins have existed at least since the reign of Ramses II in Egypt. Long suppressed reports state that the Pharaoh, during the battle of Kadesh, stood on his chariot and fired arrows from his wagon, who pierced through armor and shields with ease, trespassing multiple foes. Most paladins are observed to have the ability to infuse their weapons with power. Unlike magically enhanced weapons, Paladins can grant these incredible abilities to any weapon they bond with.
The combination of a Paladin's abilities to infuse weapons or protect himself with his natural ability to spot the undead and some other types of supernatural beings leads to many Paladins to believe it is their task in life to hunt down these creatures, or at least protect mankind from them. While this view is not universal, most Paladins end up pursuing the path of the hunter, due to their inability to ignore the word behindThe Veil.

What's in a name:

The name Paladin is a western word, popular throughout Europe and America to describe these individuals. However, individuals with these powers are just as commonly born in cultures that have no connection to that word. Japanese historically refer to these people as 'Light Champions', while in the Muslim world they are called 'Holy Warriors', and 'Dragon's Chosen' in China. Despite the different names, these warriors recognize often enough that they are the same thing, and most believe they were made for the same purpose.

The Paths of Honor:

Aside from their detection ability, Paladins are often given other gifts. Being a Paladin is often a hereditary trait, although it can skip multiple generations, and as such, Paladins within the same family often share the same abilities across generations. For many families with Heirloom weapons, this meant paladins with the same abilities would bind with the same weapons as their inherited them. For that reason, for a long time, many believe it was the weapons themselves that were enchanted. Some people theorize that Excalibur might have been a regular sword yielded by a Paladin Arthur. There are five known types of paladins. In European cultures and those descended from it, these paths are called:
  • The Ardent Flame
  • The Adamant Aegis
  • The Sanguine Zeal
  • The Radiant Light
  • The Exalted Storm
