Mana is the name given to 'magical energy' as it's understood by most creatures. Mana is present environmentally but requires an external will to manifest it.
The Source of Magic
Mana is frequently understood as being the 'source of magic' for the uninitiated. But most scholars tend to think of Mana as something comparable to a form of undetectable radiation. It's often present even if unseen and unfelt, but those attune with it can manipulate the Mana in any environment to generate effects not restricted by the Laws of Physics as we understand them. These effects are often referred to as 'magic. For humans, only those born with certain innate inclinations may actively detect and interfere with environmental energy. However, some entities seem to have a greater degree of sensibility and integration with it. Many extra-planar entities use our plane's mana to manifest themselves here or project their will into our world. These entities sometimes offer pacts to creatures, most often humans, not gifted with innate magical abilities, offering them powers in exchange for service.
