Understories
The Understories is the colloquial term for the "underground" floors of the Bedok Estates residential districts, east of the Marina Bay Dome. Over the years, this shadowy underbelly of the city has become home to more radical and unsavory segments of society. Several "gangs" are known to operate in this area, and as a result, the Understories has one of the higher crime rates within the Singapore, though incidents of violent crime remains relatively rare by international standards. A number of "slum tourism" firm also operate in the area, including iCruise's "Underside Tours".
History
The Understories developed as a result of a roadway re-elevation project, where major congested roadways running through the Bedok area were supplemented with elevated roadways, dedicated mobility vehicle lanes, and commuter walkways. Over the course of a decade, a new set of stores, restaurants and other amenities emerged at the elevated level, which then became the de-facto "ground level" concourse. The lower levels were decided lower rent, with many residents moving out due to neglected infrastructure, poor lighting and noisy living conditions. This spiral continues to the present day, and only the poor and disenfranchised inhabit the area.
