The Void

The Void is a place of strange creatures, alien geometries, and other things to make your brain overload. The Shadows are strange, the mist is thick...I don't know what Uncle was thinking, becoming an Explorer...

Geography

As if the ground was not confusing enough, The Void is also dotted with strange structures, which are covered with symbols nobody seems able to translate. Some believe these are ruins are evidence civilization once existed in this place.Others believe they were built by those who were trapped and somehow able to survive long enough to build them.

Localized Phenomena

Distance in the Void is very imprecise and seems to change from day to day. Navigating it therefore requires a Portal Triangulator, which measures the distance traveled based on positions of known portals. In general, it appears that traveling one lightyear takes between one hour to one day in a conventional traveling vehicle. Needless to say, this can make estimating travel times difficult, especially over long distances.

The Void's Dangers

At least twenty people are lost in the Void every year because they didn't have a Guide, or got separated from a group, or they couldn't follow the freaking signs...stay close, and do not wander off. Anonymous Void Guide   Due to the Void being a flat, unchanging plane filled with mist, it is very easy to get lost, especially since Warps tend to all look the same from the inside, and even the best markers fade over time. Because of this, Guides are very important when traveling, as normal navigational aids such as as compasses and GPS are no help, and communications devices get no signal. This is also why being a Void Explorer is so dangerous, and is even above Pirate Hunters in terms of risk. Many Explorers do not retire, simply wandering off into the mist, never to be seen again.

Warps

Warps are the main method of interstellar transportation in Setareh. They are wormholes that can be used to travel through the Void and thereby avoid the long trips through interstellar space. Learning to use them seems paramount for an interstellar civilization.

Void Explorers

Explorers are the hardy, brave, and somewhat foolish persons who explore the Void in hopes of mapping it out and uncovering its mysteries. It is the most dangerous profession, with over 80% of explorers disappearing before retirement.

Guides

Guides tread the paths that Explorers have already carved out. As the name suggests, they navigate groups of people through the Void to the Warp that leads to their destination.

Interesting article! I like the way you build mystery by presenting a variety of conjectures about the Void Shadows. All of these theories explore a different speculation of what the true nature of the void may be and encourage the reader to speculate as well.   I'd like to know more about the warps. Are the wormholes naturally occurring phenomena or are they produced by some kind of artificial effect? How do they work?

The Warps are probably one of the next articles I'll be working on. They can occur naturally, but it requires very specific conditions, so most of the commonly used ones are artificial. I haven't quite gotten around to how they work yet.

I look forward to reading more about it!

Thanks! And thanks for the like and follow!

The theories surrounding the shadows and the structures within the void is a really cool way to generate mystery about it. I really like the idea that they're just other explorers passing through. I also like the fact that people HAVE to risk life and limb to make paths for others to use, that's a lot better than when I other things like this where people can just go to where they want to.   I'd really like to hear more about the threats that travelers within the void face. How often do the shadows attack them? Can people fight and ambush each other within the void? Are there other threats? Do people go insane from to much void travel? Has anybody whose become lost in the void ever returned?

The Shadows don't actually attack anyone. They just kind of stand and stare and are generally pretty unnerving to everyone. You could theoretically attack someone in the Void, but the place is kind of creepy so most people just try to get in and out as fast as possible. Except the explorers. They're weird. The main threat is really getting lost, or going through the wrong Warp and ending up on a lava planet or something.

An interesting, simply but effective article about the plane between worlds! The visual of the shadow does help sell the article, and I like the theory part as well! I'm curious though. What happens if someone who's standing 90° from another person would lift the guy into their entrance point, would that be possible? How do objects get affected by this invisible "floor"?

Thank you for the fav! 1. Theoretically, yes. It would be difficult without some kind of levitation device though. 2. I'm not quite sure on this yet, but so far I'm saying that only beings with souls can use the Warps, so any object not in contact with a living being would just kinda...float there I guess? Not totally sure yet on that though.

I like the mystery you create with this place. The detail of the last theory being the newest creates a nice sense that people have been trying for a long time to decipher the secrets of the Void with minimal at best progress, which makes it seem even more mysterious.   Has anyone tried to remove or at least thin the mist in the Void? The article doesn't reference anything like that but given the importance and danger of the Void I assumed there have been failed attempts to clear the mist. It would be interesting to read about failed attempts to make the Void safer for travel, and it would further enhance the feeling of danger surrounding it.   I also feel that the ruins present in the Void deserve more detail. What exactly makes them strange? Do some of them serve as the only landmarks in the Void? Do Shadows congregate around them or stay far away? There are a lot of details that could be added to make their part in the mystery of the Void more clear.

Thanks for the comment and the fav! I might make a separate article on the ruins at some point. What makes them strange is that no one can tell exactly what their purpose is, and they're also made out of an unknown material. Shadows seem to congregate around them, which is why one theory is that they built the ruins. Thanks for the questions!

As for clearing the mist, people have tried. One guy tried to set it on fire. It didn't end well.
