Mati is the psychopomp of the Datari Pantheon. She stands on the edge of the afterlife and uses the light from her lantern to guide recently departed souls to The Eternal Light. Acoording to Datari tradition, her lantern is what creates the light that makes the stars shine, as stars are portals to the afterlife.
