Research Roll

When your character is interested in trying to glean information from something that can be researched or read over a period of time (e.g. a book, writing on ancient marble plinths, a gallery of impressionistic artwork, etc) you may attempt one or a series of Research Rolls to discover more information.
  • A Research Roll takes at least 3 hours of in-game time.
  • You may only do one roll per item per day, as it represents your best attempt for the day.
  • For the most part these will be Investigation rolls, unless you can make a good case for why another skill might be applicable for researching the particular item you are interested in.
  • The DM will set levels of information for an item and assign them a Difficulty Class. For example, a DC 10 might yield some basic or "bronze level" information, while a DC 25 might allow you to find "platinum level" information, something of great importance or a key piece of a mystery you're trying to solve.
  • For each additional, consecutive day you spend researching, the DC threshold for each level decreases by 2. So for example, if on the first day of research you rolled a 14 and missed the DC 15 "silver" and DC 25 "gold" levels set by the DM, on the second day you could try again and those DCs would have now become 13 and 23. Try again for a third day in a row, and the DCs would now be 11 and 21. And so forth.
  • If you skip a day of researching, the DCs increase by 4 (with a max of whatever their original starting point was).
