Gods' Blessing Assessment

Overview

Children in Yzel are given a test at the age of eight in order to determine their magical ability. This is done in the main temple of their city. Each child is given the test within one month of their birthday. The gods are considered the keepers of magic within the main religion of Yzel, Tekel and thus the gods must be invoked in order to awaken any possible magical abilities within the child.    Those who follow Uneism are expected to take part in the test as well. Uneism is frowned upon in Yzel and thus those who practice it will try to hide this by having their children go through the standard test. Another test is sometimes performed within the Uneist community, but this is not considered official.

History

The Assessment requirements are said to have been given to the first priests by Padka personally, although some sects credit Ahooai with delivering them and Padka only with coming up with the list of assessment steps. Whatever the truth, the test was originally put in place as a six day affair. Each day was given over to one of the essences and the child immersed in them as much as possible before being tested at the end of the day, after the evening meal.
  • Heat: a hot room
  • Light: a room with large, open windows
  • Air: a blank room with three walls
  • Void: an underground cell
  • Earth: a cave near the temple (or room carved into the ground for this specific purpose in more populated areas)
  • Liquid: a pool within the temple
Upon the completion of the sixth day, the child was allowed to rest and the results presented to the family on the seventh. Even if the child was unable to use any of the essences, they were still considered to have been blessed by the experience.

Modern Practice

With the business of life increasing, along with the population of cities and the need for children to remain in school, a six day affair is no longer practical and is only used in very rural areas of the kingdom. Instead, six hours has become the norm with the child moved from location to location after one hour each. The results are presented at the end of the sixth hour.    After the test is over, the child and family pray to Ahooai and Padka in thanks for the test and to ask for blessings on their lives.
