Midyear

"Wow, what a creative name for a holiday." - Valelandic civil servant

History

It is thought that Midyear was originally an ancient elven celebration. Some have postulated that this was originally a harvest festival, but the timing for this is a little off. It likely spread into the southern islands of the Midasin, Dvi included, during the heyday of the house of Thyd when their realm colonized a great deal of the area and spread their customs to the people inhabiting it.

Execution

This day is celebrated enthusiastically as the high point of the year. It also doubles as a precursor to the harvest and a pre-celebration of its expected bounty. The day is one of optimism and hope, as well as being a traditional time for a balance of power to shift somehow. Many pieces of literature have dramatic moments where the heroes unexpectedly overcome adversity occur on Midyear.

Observance

The celebration is widely observed in Thruckland as well as the southern Islands. Further north it is less commonly observed, though following the Mopsian wars it has been connected to a degree with the nearby Celebration of the Free Realms, bringing it more recognition. The celebration occurs on the 2nd Gohte of Kelber annually.
