The U.S.S. Dotterel

Write about a ship (or a spaceship) that is used for leisure purposes. How does owning one change how someone is perceived?   So named by the owner both for his love of birds, and the general nature of the vessel was so named for the habit of hugging the shoar line and stopping at many small harbors along the coast. Each round trip had a varying number of stops, interspersed at regular intervals to ensure there were enough passengers at each stop to make it worth the while also maintaining the ever-rising need for expedient travel.   The Dotterel surpassed its counterparts of the time but kept the high style of travel expected and turned the trips into a kind of luxury cruise. This set itself apart from travel by train as the sound and scenery were far more pleasant, the quality of air was good, and the travels of any particular person were difficult to follow due to the ability to make easy changes and get off at any particular port on the journey. The chase of any who might pursue was made more difficult as the Dotterel would not complete precisely the same trip for quite some time.   This made the Dotterel a honeymoon destination for many couples who had or wished to elope, or wealthy men who were traveling with companions who they also happened to not be married to. There was a connotation with the Dotterel and her sister ships that the mier act of going on such a voyage was almost as good as admitting to an immoral act. However, since ship captains are able to perform marriages, their popularity was not easily dimmed.   Unbeknownst to the general public, the owner of the Dotterel was no mere amateur ornithologist, but a woman who was both well versed in the subject and the owner of a profitable business as well. She practiced business as a man, but lived and traveled as a woman for ease of the process, professing to be married to Mr. Crain, which was actually her nom de plume when she practiced business. She traveled in her leisure as Mrs. Crain. Although some comment that it is odd that they are never seen together, as most people are generally polite, they are gracious to say it behind her back. Mrs. Crain's true name is Eliza Marie Anderson-Phillips. She was not married, never married, and had no wish to do so. Her wealth and property did pass to a beloved niece who was incidentally named after her. It was speculated that her niece Eliza Marie Dubose was in fact her daughter.   Other ships include:
  • USS Plover
  • USS Laridae
  • USS Degland & Gerbe (sister ships)
  • USS Ardeidae
