"I KNOW that the gods exist, but I also know that they're a pain in my ass."
It is widely accepted that gods exist. The story of creation paints them not as the creators of the world, but co-creations of it; made to keep it going and protect. To mere mortals, they are beings too strong to be anything less than gods, but they don't always act in a godly fashion. Each of them with a role to keep, a function to focus on, they still find time to be active in other ways, having developed quite the personalities throughout the ages.
Besides them, some places even worship entities outside of the god-domain, such as spirits, elements, and others - unknown if any of these additionals actually exist. Different cultures focus on different entities, some even waging war due to the difference of opinion. A god is considered as strong as its worshipers, concluding that one can defeat a god by destroying its base. The truth of this has yet to be seen.
