Marble Harbor

Marble Harbor is a small sized city on the eastern coast of the Kingdom of Thorolund.

Government

Marble Harbor is run by Knight-Lord Donovan of House Halaiser. Being an anointed lord, he is the governing body of the city, and holds court over the laws and interpretations of those laws. He owns the plains outside the city and the farms thereon for extended miles. However, the guilds hold primary sway over the economy, limiting the power of the centralized government.

Defences

A watch tower with a massive bell serves as both a lighthouse and warning alarm from the sea, standing atop the northern most bluff overlooking the mouth of the harbor. Around the western border, north to south, are marble and limestone walls encircling the central limits of the city. On the north-western border of these walls sits the impressive castle that serves as the central fortress for the rest of the township.

Guilds and Factions

White Carvers Guild - A union of stone masons and sculptors that hold massive sway over the financial politics of the city.

History

Marble Harbor began its life as a small settlement on the eastern coast of Thrastia, and became a popular spot for vacationers and boaters thanks to the extended protected harbor. It wasn't long before the place gained its current name, as the rocky bluffs protecting the harbor were made of marble, to which the settlement primarily became a quarry. The vast amounts of marble found in the ridge made the settlement wealthy in ship based trade, moving quarried marble across the nation, especially so as Elluvitar's temples were first being built.   While the quarrying business has slowed down, Marble Harbor has continued to be a safe port for all sea fairing folk.

Architecture

The bounty found in the cliffs off the cities' shore wasn't all spirited elsewhere in the booming trade market. The majority of important structures, with the other stone structures utilizing sea stones and the natural terrain to build the structures. Thatched buildings on top of stone bases are commonplace, wood coming primarily from the Umber Swamp and its black trees.   The white stone and black wood look of the city is rather striking, and architects often take artistic liberties with this sense of duality.

Geography

A small stream provides freshwater for the settlement, rising out of a hot spring in the western plains. The expansive green sea of grassland is met by the endless blue sea here, broken up by towering stone bluffs in a crescent shape extending in a semi-circle into the ocean, forming a natural harbor.

Natural Resources

Marble is the primary natural resource of the city, however fishing is common in the harbor, as it is a poorly kept secret large catches enjoy the peaceful still waters of the harbor, living a quiet murky life until a fisherman draws them into the light.
