Dragons

Dragons are best known as mighty and terrible creatures, malefic or benevolent depending upon the dragon itself. Nobody can doubt the strength and power of a fully grown dragon, and if unchecked, a dragon can assert itself as ruler of entire realms that put the empires of men and elves to shame. Dragons however, are technically not creatures in the same sense of the word that we as humans are.   In the creation of the universe, the primordial elements were chaotic, a swarming maelstrom of matter that slowly calmed to form the world. Out of this elemental chaos, beings formed and collected as much of the energy of creation as they could, and power drew power, the mightiest of which hold unbelievable strength. These mightiest beings become known as the Gods, and the Primordial Dragons. These great beings made their home above the world in the Astral Sea, casting their influence to Earth only as they saw fit, their power so great they were worshipped by the lesser beings of the world. The primordial dragons had even more interest in the earth, ruling the first empires which spread across the entire planet, their separate realms being a huge jigsaw puzzle of perfectly fitting borders, each single realm large enough to cover continents. Conflicts among the primordial dragons rose up after millennia together, ending their draconic empires with their own self-destruction, leaving only their lesser offspring with the world, the largest of which paled in comparison to the might of their primordial ancestors. These descendants became reclusive to the extreme, leaving the rulership of the earth to lesser creatures most of the time.   Being creatures made out of the stuff of the world, dragons are more akin to elementals than they are animals. A dragon’s hide color is usually a indication of what kind of element it is wrought from, but exceptions have been noted. As they are raw power in a physical form, dragons cannot die of old age, and only grow with time. Dragons also lack souls unlike mortal beings, and thus if they are destroyed, they cannot be brought back to life like humans can, through resurrection spells or otherwise. They can however will themselves to die, and these willing subjects are usually peaceful, good breeds who once they feel their role in the world is over, fade back into the elemental essence of the world. A dragon’s will is their most spectacular and powerful feature, as dragons commonly will death away, becoming completely unkillable. This is an ability known only to the most powerful dragons, to defeat death out of sheer strength is something no other creature has been remotely capable of replicating. However, if one were to force a soul upon a dragon, then they could be forced to die like any mortal being.   Of note, dragons have a distinct name that they pick for themselves in the Draconic tongue, a name completely distinct to themselves and rarely pronounceable by human tongues. This complex name is usually a well guarded secret by the dragons, as one who is able to call out a dragon’s true name and it will force the dragon to respond and come to the summoner. A dragon cannot resist the summon of one who knows its true name, and will likely attempt to kill the one who knows its secret in a manner similar to a formal duel. There have been legends of those who summoned a dragon, fought it, and then fled to avoid being defeated by the beast. Cowards of this kind are placed under the “Dragon’s Curse,” a powerful effect of mysterious abilities, though the only thing for certain is dying by the dragon’s hand is always preferable. As such, it is very rare for anyone to call a dragon’s true name without the strictest confidence in their ability to defeat it. Dragons summoning dragons through their true name is also an easy way to bring about a mate, and is commonly used. It is equally common for the summoned dragon to find the summoner less than desirable or weak, and kills them instead   All dragons have the ability to polymorph into humanoid creatures, typically humans or elves, or animals at a whim, able to look however they so please, typically taking themes from the kind of dragon they are. They often use these disguises when dealing with the humanoid races, in tasks ranging from diplomacy, spiritual guidance, or something as simple as fitting somewhere too small for a giant creature. This is also how dragons end up getting their bloodline into the humanoid races, causing a great deal of draconic magic sorcerers to appear. It could also be something as simple as the intimacy of beating the crap out of someone on their level, and if it looks like the disguised dragon might be losing, it can always turn into its true form and breathe on them. Who will question a dragon on fairness after all?   Sadly, in most of the known world, Gold Dragons are extinct, red dragons brag that they were the slayers of the entire species. Whether true or not, a gold dragon hasn’t been seen in 1000 years, and that was in the far east continent.

The youngest of the least intelligent runt of a clutch of white dragon wrymlings is as smart as the average human. A Great Wyrm Prime Gold Dragon, with tens of millennia in its past will be perhaps the smartest creature in the entire multiverse.
