Aearvenúr (Aquatic Elves)

Aquatic civilizations as they are in the world above are nigh impossible for one large reason, the ocean erodes and rusts, and the materials we rely upon from the poorest farm hut to the grandest cathedral cannot be used in construction within the sea. Despite this, the sea is just as full if not more so than the world above, with living cities of coral with creatures slipping among the crags. This is the realm of the Aearvenúr, one of the sentient groups that inhabit the waters of the world.   Unlike their distant surface cousins, Aquatic Elves, or merfolk as they are commonly known, lack in rich ancient history and empires spanning thousands of miles. Rather, they would be unlikely to gather in a pod of greater than a couple hundred, forming familial clans and carving out a small section of the ocean. They can be found everywhere from shallow reefs, to deep lakes, and even the forbidding black trenches, more akin to humans in their potential for individual diversity than other elves.   Peaceful is not a way to describe the submarine world, and merfolk must content against the likes of sahuagin, sharks, kraken, and worst of all, the rare aboleth. In terms of alliances, none can be truly made with the savage aquatic elves, though gatherings of mutual survival can be scrapped together by the devoted triton or Undine. In terms of interaction with the surface world, this is rare as they have little interest or investment of the other world. This hasn't stopped countless legends and songs being told of interactions between mermaids and fishermen.
