Terra Nova

Like Demeter, Terra Nova is home to many mega-corporations and good number of smaller companies. But of all these, the legendary Bank of Terra has its headquarters here.   Terra Nova is a predominantly ocean world with no permanent land masses. Actual land is limited to hundreds of barrier islands, moving at the whim of the sea. To support the millions who came to terra nova, artificial platforms were secured to the ocean floor from which grew towers hundreds of stories high. Sprawling arcologies that were basically cities that hover above the sea.   The actual barrier islands are dedicated entirely to farming by farmers who tie their junques and house boats/rafts to the land but generally float beside it like so many floating villages which grow and shrink as the local season passes and the itinerant farm workers move on.   The primary protein on Terra Nova is fish, although at the higher strata of society, red meat and imported foods become available as do hydroponic foods grown in the gardens atop the towers and in large hydroponic labs that float beside the cities.   Food grown on Terra Nova does not often leave it, banking, insurance, and other related products are it's primary export. The one exception to that is the rare and expensive Kobe beef, the source of which, at least on Terra Nova, does not show on any maps. Access to RitoruKōbe off-planet is through a small number of wholesalers who are very quiet about any downstream information.    Groups of towers form small cities joined at the bottom by floating villages and at the lower middle, middle and upper middle by skybridges. The tops are joined by parks which generally span all the buildings of the city that reach the same height. It is comparable to the old earth city of Singapore which was said to have several of such towers before the exodus.   The largest and most populous city Xīnjiā (new home) which began with three tall towers formed on a ring and was joined by additional shorter towers placed within the ring and finally by a large sea level floating city between and around that houses a semi-permanent market. One tower is dedicated to operation of the only Bank known and recognized in every core, Bank of Terra while the other two were built as housing for those who work at the bank. The top 12 floors of all three of the original towers house the largest and most influential family on the planet, perhaps even the cores; the Wen family. The parks adjoining these three towers are closed to the public except for certain holidays when the Wen family Zoo is opened to the public, however the shorter inner city towers do culminate in pleasant parks for the public.   The planet is prone to fierce storms that can generate hefty waves, nearly tidal in height and rogue waves are not uncommon. Thus the lowest levels of the towers are prone to flooding and considered damp and unpleasant. At this level live the lowest strata of society and so the language has taken, along with the colorful asian curses brought by the original settlers an association of dampness and mold to the poor and dryness and rarefication to the top tiers.   The colonists who first arrived on Terra Nova came from Eastern Asia and the pacific islands on old earth. Primarily, the emigrants were Chinese but the larger countries and archipelagos were well enough represented but as per human custom, the ethnic groups tended to band together. It is possible to find cities and villages on Terra Nova that contain few to no Chinese citizens, but the history of China permeates society on Terra Nova.   The primary language is Mandarin Chinese, but their more isolated cities have a strong influx of other Asian languages peppered into the Chinese, some of which has joined the Terra Nova lingua franca.
