S8. The Adventurers’ New Clothes

General Summary

Marpenoth 16 - 17
Torgan (John) — 02/04/2022 Session Eight - The Adventurers’ New Clothes We join our audacious, almost-au-naturel assembly of adventurers as they attempt to acquire the ancient temple’s mysterious, extra-planar gauntlet of greed. After a last-ditch effort to send Depot, their goblin squire, to reclaim their lost loot, the party decides to cut their losses and head back to Phandalin.
As they approach town, the white dragon returns to attack - but flies off as quickly as it came. The dragon has grown bold enough to start stealing the town's livestock. Torgan gives the farmer a few coins for his loss, and in return, asks him if he’ll assist with turning out any citizens interested in defending themselves by bow and arrow.
The party goes shopping to replace the gear and smallclothes they so ill-advisedly lost in the excavated temple. After Sir Nesbit and Bright Song extract their reward from the spineless townmaster, they return to the Stonehill Inn, where a new visitor buys a round: Ralzik, a knavish tiefling rogue who takes an interest in the group’s recent exploits. He helps our heroes drill the townsfolk in some archery basics and agrees to join the party's next errand: they set out at dawn to investigate reports of orcs attacking the neighboring Butterskull Ranch, and safely escort one Don Jon Raskin to his new post as the foreman of the nearby Mountain’s Toe gold mine.
That night, Jareth experiences a foreboding dream that echo the ones Ninris described to the group: a terrible storm of purple lightning blasts into town, followed by visions of the leering white dragon with endless legions of the undead pouring forth from its maw. The monk receives an ominous warning that he must “prepare” in the fallen cleric's stead.
After a full day’s travel on the Triboar Trail, the adventurers make camp. Their fitful sleep is interrupted by a tabaxi’s bloodcurdling yowl - the manticore they routed from Umbridge Hill has finally tracked them down to enact its revenge, with an angry mate in tow. With fury (and no small amount of luck), the courageous heroes handily slay the spiteful beasts. Ethyl jubilantly sets about the grisly task of dismembering the monsters’ corpses into their valuable organs, bits, and bobs.
Will our masterful monstrosity meleers meet more misfortune before making it to the mountainous mine? Tune in next week to find out!
