S5. Red Cloaks & Dragon Claws Report in Saviors of the Sword Coast | World Anvil

S5. Red Cloaks & Dragon Claws

General Summary

Marpenoth 13 - 14
Kally Brook | (Chris) — 01/12/2022 Red Cloaks & Dragon Claws, the very ones that I believe responsible for the disappearances in the forests, were just across the hall it seems! Unfortunately the time in the lab was too brief and the fight quickly pulled us into the hall. Jerath bravely sought to keep them contained and our way of escape clear but was met at the top of the stairs by two of the fiends trying to cut off any escape we may have. The group does move quickly and they engaged the enemy. The Dragon claws are trained well it seems and capable of a coordinated flurry of blows. The Monk Jareth, still set on seeking to help prevent the group from being trapped below, bravely pushed through the enemy trying to push the fight out of the hall and give our group space. Tragically he was cut down and mercilessly run through again by the curved blade of these cultists he fell.
The group managed to dispatch the enemy and seemed sorely shaken by the loss of one of their team. Hearing commotion in the next room over the group decided to withdraw into the lab and collect their strength for another push out. There was some argument toward leaving the area but their gnomish friend was still lost and recovering their composure and strength they pushed forward.
The group readied for an ambush and the solid one, Torgen, banged loudly on the door past the dining hall announcing their presence. No chance for diplomacy with the twang of a crossbow bolt into the door as a goblin poked out. It wasn't long after that three bugbears charged out** and were cut down in the hallway by the revenge of word and blade.
The goblin, depot, turned out to be a simpleton, as so many of them are. He doesn't seem overly cruel though and I suspect would do ok put to work back home or elsewhere in exchange for food and shelter. Torgen made it clear he has no patience for its foolishness recounting stories of others lost to his kind.
As the group cleared the area they were eventually interrupted by a scream of surprise back in the lab. I stayed with the goblin to watch him and I gather that the triton cleric I observed speaking with the creature in the ravine, a Ninris, it seems has sacrificed himself to his god in exchange for the life of this Monk Jareth. I was surprised by the level of honor shown among some of them with this act and bravery in battle as they seemed like blood thirsty tomb raiders at first. The group seemed in shock somewhat and ready to have the place behind them.
The tabaxi minstrel did speak with the creature in the ravine again before leaving to lay their triton friend to rest. I'm suspired they leave a creature of such death alive so close to the village here in exchange for the hope of some secrets. Apparently we were in caverns just below an old estate outside the village here. They made their way back toward town and the Monk left for some solitude for the night it seems. The others are heading for the inn I believe. I'm not sure this goblin will be welcome there. Perhaps I can get the dragon born or tabaxi to help watch him tonight or have him stay in a stall with me blocking the door.
