Frontier - The Western March

Frontier as a city, was initially supported by all Freelands nations, to create a bulwark in the fabled western lands of Zahdoni, a grand experiment to push the western boundaries of the Tri-nation Alliance, and tame nature. Today it stands, stubbornly, as the furthest civilised point into “The Beast Lands”, both independent of (and somewhat reliant on) its founding nations’ support, a subnation of its own as the experiment seemingly failed. Frontier acts simultaneously as the capitol as well as only city of the Zahdoni nation; even so, it is a relatively small city in terms of population, being built for a much larger community of years past. Still it is a successful agrarian culture, and has yet to fall in its century of survival.   THIRD GRAND EXPERIMENT OF ITS NAME The current city of Frontier is, in fact, the third attempt of the same name made by the East into Zahdoni, and has been, somewhat, successful in its endeavours. Unlike the doomed First Expedition by Ridir, which sat in the north western highlands where storms are fierce, agriculture is difficult, and much of the fauna is deadly; current Frontier sits in a slightly hilly plain of fertile land, protected from most weather by the larger hills the border the fields.    Similarly, it is safe from pillaging species due to it bordering the Durach Forest to the west, and the rocky hills to the north and south being difficult to cross in stealth or number. This is unlike the Second Expedition by Edel that was planted firmly in the centre of a easily accessed ex-flood plain.    Other than its geographical location, the most recent Frontier Expedition owes much of its success to the joined efforts of the the trination alliance. The city sits on a tributary river that flows directly into Mertessan land, making its resourcing near impossible without the river nation. Likewise, the combined manpower, expertise, and past experience of Edel and Ridir regarding the Zahdoni Expeditions has prevented the recurrence of many fatal mistakes.   PRODUCTION A primarily agrarian city, Frontier supports a its community with little effort, supplying excess grain to the East through trade. It supports its agrarian works with some herds of giant boar that were originally traded and bred by forest folk in the southern region, the uaine (oo-in-ya) people. Finally, there is some wild game to the north and south on the plains.    RULER The High Marquees is the ruler of these lands, legally independent of the three nations that sponsored them, but broadly held subservient to them. The job originally was to oversee taxation and trade, acting to provide the burgeoning marche support from the East while giving information from the West to its allies. However, the failed experiment has dwindled these duties to managing local trade, export and import agreements, and major community disputes. They are required to hold court once a week, sign documentation, and that is about it.   The current High Marquees is Lorfyr Lightstar, whom was raised in Frontier and has seen the rise and fall of the third Zahdoni experiment. His father held the title before him, and instilled a great love of Zahdoni in Lorfyr.
