Flame - An Arcanochemical Perspective

Arcanochemically, all forms of what would be seen as "fire" operate by compressing entropic possibilities into assured forms, i.e. removing Change and Freedom particles. Some create others, while actual, regular fire just frees and returns Chaos to its default state, as all things comprising material forms have Chaos in them; the root of all material. Rimefire burns cold and blue-purple, and as heat spreads differently in one direction than the other, unevenly. This causes petrification of the skin, or at least frostbite, blisters, cracking, whitening, and flaking. It is also rumored to "claim" that which burns, so that which is destroyed, "after the burn", returns to the God-King's heart beneath the earth, entombed ad infinitum. To be able to create it means that you are damned, a wayward shard of the Evil Below, fated to one day return.   Balefire, using chemical concoctions and scientific observations, is a type of fire that sticks and clings, and "burns" without the need for Freedom particles, which are only found in the air and living things, never inanimate material aside from microbes and minute biology. It burns underwater and is nearly impossible to put out. It was created by the Architects of Nox at the turning of the age, and its flames match and preserve the light of civilization, declaring scientifically: Neither will go out.   Darkflame, one that creates another, burns black and white and--if you're unlucky--invisibly. It does not burn physically and so often ignores Chaos particles, burning Freedom particles in the air, yes, but it seeks living things as if it were sapient. It burns not flesh but souls, melting not bones but hopes, dreams, ideas, and identities... until there is nothing left but an empty flesh waiting to be piloted.
