The Great Tower of Mithvus

The Great Tower of Mithvus was, when it stood, the centre of magical learning in Sammerden . It was the home of more than 20 different Circles, gathered into one by the Grand Circle, to study, refine, and innovate in the magical arts. It was one of the few buildings which relied on magic for its construction and stability - the magical architects exceeded the original ability of the materials they used.   The Tower was first constructed during the Age of Myth - before Calthor itself - and both the time and founder are (and were) lost to history. Most records agree that the entrance bore the inscription "Bolthus built this at the hest of Vamlus, Vik and Lord, 20 years after he took the rulership" - but this reveals little of value. The original tower was built out of dark granite - though at the height of the tower's influence, the 'Old Tower' was actually an internal tower, making up about a third of the floorspace of the larger tower, and rising only ten of the forty stories. The 'new' Tower was made of limestone, with marble accents and highlights.   As the centre of magical study, it was also the focal point for the efforts of Held v'Tor and the 'Creator's Circle' to Breach the Stars and force their way into the Creator's realm. The powers unleashed saw the tower, strong as it was collapse almost entirely, and almost all of its inhabitants die instantly. These were the lucky ones - for the remainder became the first victims of the Accursed Ones, and the Empty. The Old Tower was used solely for administration and the Circle leadership. It is said - by the very few sources which claim to recount eyewitness reports - that this old tower survived even the destructive force of the Breach. It is speculated that the Empty Invasion was so potent because the first living victims of the Accursed Ones were the wisest and most skilled mages of the age, suddenly turned against the civilisation they once stood atop.
