Illiam a Cirnun (EL-ee-am AR KIR-noon)

Master Illiam a Cirnun (a.k.a. Master Illiam)

Master Illiam a Cirnun is the Elosi who serves as 'Master Maker' for the Order of Sentinels. Originally born in the Kingdom of Eyoit, the Elosi homeland, he began his trade as a 'Fine-Worker', the Eyoit term for smiths and craftsmen who deal mostly in mechanical, small objects and the use of the metal known as Dawn Silver.    Setting out, in his thirtieth year, on the traditional journey of a craftsman, he decided to travel further than most, to Calthor itself. His true specialism was clock mechanisms - much used in Eyiot but rarer beyond her high walls. He knew, however, that two public clocks existed in Calthor - he hoped to be able to work on them, and (he admits) he secretly hoped to win fame by constructing a third - ideally for the royal palace itself.    As he was journeying, he took the longer route through the Redfern Commonwealth, and crossed the Bo at Bolford. He had already arranged three months tutelage here under a noted metal smith, as he sought to develop his decorative skill. Unfortunately, this was to be cut short. Within a month of his arrival, the traditional mistrust for the Elosi was growing in the city - and their relaxed use of magic (alongside the fact that magic is more common among the Elosi) saw them accused of dark deeds and murder. Illiam did fratenise with the local Elosi community, which numbered fewer than 300. His master began expressing doubts about continuing his training but - in the week a decision was to be made - Illiam and four other Elosi crafters were caught in the marketplace magically forming metal into jewellery to sell (a perfectly legal pursuit).   A mob formed, and soon turned violent. He saw two friends butchered by the mob, and was close to being seized himself when his life was saved by the Red Sentinels. They were in the city to keep order and charged the crowd, pushing them back. What Illiam had witnessed was the beginning of a week of anti-Elosi riots, but he knew none of this - being spirited out of the city that evening by a Green Sentinel convoy headed to Greenwood.   His experience, and the hatred he witnessed, deeply marked Illiam. But, so too did the kindness of the Sentinels. One night on the way to Greenwood, he lamented the loss of his learning, and the Serjeant leading the convoy promised him two months learning at the Sentinel outpost in Greenwood - warning that he'd have to learn to "work proper metal, not just fancy wiring" while there.   In truth, he never looked back - within the first month at Greenwood, mutual affection grew up, Illiam inspired by the mission of the Order, and the Sentinels in turn valuing the skilled smith with the dry humour. Though he was never going to smith the finest war-axes in the Order, he had a dexterity and skill with fine metals that few Order smiths could match. Though he had vaguely intended to return to Eyoit when a master, he accepted a post with the Order in their camp, and has remained there for the last 70 years - serving faithfully and training many, many successors.    While there, he has not merely served - but pushed the bounds of knowledge outside Eyoit. Before him, the Order had only a "Master Smith" - his unique title of Master Maker reflects the fact that many of his inventions have been much wider than just smithing. He pioneered the used of mechanics and clock-mechanisms to enhance the Order's bows - creating the Farbow, doubling the range an experienced archer can shoot, and allowing a boy to shoot as if he had a decade of practice after only a month. He then took this mechanisation one step further with the Repeating Crossbow - allowing defenders to fire five times faster, with almost no effort. If the rumours are true, he has enlarged this design, and created a carriage to bear the weapon around at speed...
