Audex (OR-decks)

An audex is a professed member of the Cult of Justice, a trained and professional lawyer, judge, and advisor who practices their trade as a form of religious devotion - seeking to enact and defend the Creator's will through law and politics.   Though, in many areas, it is not required to be an audex to argue in courts or advise minor nobility, the Cult of Justice, and the wider Sanctorum promote the use of audex both to assure the quality of administration, and its piety. At the same time, many of those considering legal or political careers will naturally gravitate towards the Cult of Justice and become audex before first practicing law or seeking a role as an advisor.   Audex are also heavily used in the administration of the Grand Sanctorum, and their presence is valued (and sometimes mandated) to keep the peace among different Cults in large mixed sanctorums. They also make up most of the personnel in the Grand Sanctorum itself, in Calthor

Perception

Purpose

The audex bring a religious element to otherwise secular administrative roles. Within the Sanctorum, they are absolutely vital as mediators, judges, enforcers and advisers. All consecrated audex (the highest rank, as opposed to acolyte audex, the second rank) serve in the Sanctorum and a forbidden from secular service. Some serve within the Grand Sanctorum in Calthor where there are a variety of tasks:
  • Support for each Cult's delegation to the Sanctorum - while the Cult will send their own officials, three audex are appointed to each Cult to advise on matters of Sanctorum law, to act as legal officers, and to help mediate disputes within and without the Cult.
  • Administration of Sanctorum justice, where the Grand Sanctor (rather than one of the Cults) has brought the case. Often these will be serious theological cases, cases of serious discord among the Cults, or any religious offence committed in Calthor itself. Occasionally, significant secular individuals accused of religious crimes will be brought to the Sanctorum for judgement
  • Administration of the Sanctorum Council - advising the Grand Sanctor, as well as answering correspondence from Cults, religious, and secular leaders on matters of Sanctorum law, justice, and administration.
Many other audex are sent to serve the Sanctorum outside Calthor, including by:
  • Administering Sanctorum Courts in large cities, to try both religious and secular individuals for religious crimes, and resolve mid-level disputes between resident Cults.
  • Serving in a sanctorum with many Cults present to both advise and mediate between the leaders
  • Advising High Sanctors and, in rare cases, secular rulers who have been granted a consecrated audex

Social Status

Audex - particularly consecrated audex - are widely respected as rulers, judges, and administrators, as well as as consecrated sanctors.   However, outside the academic, religious, political, and legal realm they operate in, they are not revered as greatly as other - more obviously holy - elements of the Sanctorum. The average citizen is likely to consider them religious lawyers (and occasional troublemakers through court cases and investigations) than good and holy servants of the Creator.
