Lanuages in Salea

The languages below replace the options available to players in the Player's Handbook and other published materials.
The various nations of Salea were once the homelands of specific races and in many cases those races are still a majority population in the country. For this reason many of the languages of Salea correspond to racial languages as described in the Player's Handbook and other materials. Players start being able to speak Common and the language of their country of origin. This replaces the language granted to you by your race. In Salea, your first language impacts your ability to communicate with others. Other languages picked up in school, trades, or travels, can be chosen as normal. Since the Great War national origin has become more important than racial origin and this is reflected in the languages one learns.   Common in Salea is a lingua franca used either coarsely in every day market speech in large cities with diverse populations, or extremely formally in official trans-national documents. NPCs may assume your country of origin and the languages you are able to speak based on looks but countering this assumption is not met with prejudice. Persuasion, Intimidation, Insight, and Deception checks are rolled at Advantage if both you and the target speak the same First Language, and at Disadvantage if you do not share any languages besides Common.
The major languages of Salea are as follows:
  • Tafod Hardd (Tavod Harrthe): An official language of Morethalas and spoken by those of Elven descent. The literal translation into Common is "Beautiful Tongue". Equivalent to PHB "Elven".
  • Tafod Hyll (Tavod Hulth): or "Ugly Tongue" in Common. Mutually understandable with Tafod Hardd but Persuasion, Intimidation, Insight, and Deception checks are rolled at Disadvantage if the ONLY language you share is Tafod Hardd or Common. Equivalent to PHB "Undercommon".
  • Tafod (Tavod): A base language. Tafod Hardd and Tafod Hyll are both derived from it, but a surprisingly high INT check is required to decipher Tafod on its own. Equivalent to PHB "Sylvan".
  • Epronian: The official language of Epron and spoken by many religiously observant dwarves around the world. Equivalent to PHB "dwarven".
  • Oskyian Patois: A pidgin of several indigenous languages. Spoken in Oskye and the larger Federation of Allied Islands, and by seafarers at large. PCs taking the Sailor, Smuggler, Fisher, or Shipwright backgrounds can learn Oskyian Patois as a First Language.
  • Ostininian: An official language in the Federation of Allied Islands.
  • Orcish Plains Sign Language: An official language of Morethalas. Individual Orcish bands have their own spoken languages that can be taken as individual Languages, but OPSL is spoken by all Orcs in Morethalas and abroad. Orcish and Half-Orcish PCs can take OPSL for free in addition to any language given to them by race, background, or class.
  • Gashanic: Spoken in Gashain, and also in the western parts of Epron and in the northern half of Promaria. Equivalent to both PHB 'halfling' and 'gnomish'.
  • Chuy: Spoken in the Yuan-Ti and Aaracockra homeland of Chuyqua.
  • Amazwi kaThixo (aMAZwee k'TEEK'Klow): Spoken in the dragonborn homeland of Xoshoyjan. The literal translation into Common is "God's Words" as many dragonborn believe the dragon gods created them.

The following languages from the Player's Handbook are also available as presented in published materials.
  • Abyssal.
  • Infernal.
  • Celestial.
  • Primordial.
  • Giant.
  • Deep Speech.
  • Gnoll.
If a subclass feature grants you a new language in the first level of that feature, like the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer, Mastermind Rogue, Knowledge Domain Cleric, or similar, you can treat any language you learn as a First Language.
