Bremour

Bremour is the capital city of, and largest settlement in, Epron. An ancient disaster destroyed a nearly perfect circle of the forests of Epron and instantly petrified the trees turning them into sediment rich stone. When the ancestors of modern dwarfkind first left their homes in the Underdark for the surface, this forest made of rocks was much more plesant and the alien flora around them and they settled here. The city today is a bustling metropolis and the center of a vast kingdom. Few of the original trees remain in full and instead the city is built of their remains. Vistitors who do not know the history of the city are struck by the intricacy of the woodgrain that appears on most of the facing stones used throughout the architecture. It has given the city the nickname, "The City of Stone Planks", or "The Medusa's Wood" if a negative implication is desired.   As with the rest of Epron, Bremour has been ruled by the Church of Moradin since 1163 and the ascension of High Forgesmith Ashdraft to the Regency in the so-called "Holy Ascension". The current Lord Mayor is the Smith of Souls Tharrik Grungihohk.

Demographics

Bremour is more than 90% Dwarven. The remaining population is spread thin throughout locale and class and do not represent any significant political bloc. There are a few Elven families in the upper classes, and one or two Human or Gnomish families of note. Since the annexation of Gashainian territory there was a small influx of Gnomes into the city trying to find safety or fortune in their new homeland's capital.

Government

Bremour is governed by a small privy council headed by the Lord Mayor. Since the Holy Usurption the Lord Mayorship has been comingled with the Smith of Souls for Bremour, giving that priest both religious and temporal power of the city. Councillors are still elected by the citizens in general elections, but a majority of the power is vested in the Lord Mayor and the Church has an outsized influence on who can stand for election and who wins.

Guilds and Factions

Bremour is dominated by the Great Houses of the former nobility of Epron. All of the feudal houses were converted to ecclesiastical positions and will only remain in their hereditary family for one generation. The real property of the houses were granted to the families, however, and since most of the nobles retained at least a cottage in Bremour many of these powerful and wealthy families have resettled in the capital. A member of the Great Houses occupies every spot on the privy council besides the Lord Mayor himself, and so many local policies still favor these ancient families.   The Brass Snakes are the largest criminal organization in Bremour and control most of the 'unholy' work within the city.

Points of interest

As the capital of Epron, Bremour is home to many important and interesting sites. Three massive stone trees dominate the skyline of the city: the Tree of Moradin, the Tree of Bremour, and the Tree of Justice. These three are the only remaining standing trees of what used to be the old-growth redwood forest that was obliterated in the ancient disaster before the founding of the city.   The Tree of Moradin is home to the Great Synod of Moradin, the governing council of the nation of Epron.   The Tree of Bremour was the palace of the Monarchs of Epron before the Holy Ascension, and now is the home of the High Forgesmith.   The Tree of Justice houses the Gathering of Five Crafstmen and its staff.
