School Uniform

In Japan, the typical school uniform worn by boys is called gakuran (学ラン). Gakuran includes a jacket, which has a standing collar and buttons, and straight-legged pants. A gakuran jacket's buttons are usually metal and have the school's emblem.School Uniforms in Japan
During the Japanese Occupation, many aspects of Saharin's education system were built in the image of Japan's. This included the introduction of uniforms and, specifically, gakuran. As much of Saharin is impoverished and the bulk of the year is very cold, there were no objections to standardizing school children wearing a wool jacket and pants. At the time, metals mined in Saharin were largely diverted to the Japanese. Therefore, buttons of other materials or ties were often used.
Modern Saharinese gakuran have zippers. This is often attributed to Saharinese practicality: zippers are warmer. However, it is actually an economical choice. In the 1960s, a factory mass producing nylon coil zippers was built in Kimura. These zippers therefore became extremely cheap and using metal for zippers or fashion in general was seen as ostentatious. Metal, after all, was needed to rebuild Saharin's defenses and her economy.
While wearing gakuran even partly unbuttoned is seen as delinquent behavior in Japan, being partly or wholly unzippered is not a faux pas in Saharin. Saharin gakuran jackets are usually heavy in deference to the extremely cold winters but summers in Saharin are extremely humid such that most students will forgo the jacket entirely in June. It's also worth noting that this type of zipper is cheap and it's not uncommon for the zipper to drift down on its own, especially if the student is active or growing out of the jacket.
In deference to poverty as well as the weather, Saharinese public schools may have a dress code but often do not have an official uniform. Gakuran may be required at the middle school level but is not limited to boys. No public school, 9th grade or lower, requires girls to wear skirts, though many do. Private schools and high schools, even if publicly funded, may have a stricter and more gender-differentiated uniform. It is common for younger students to emulate older students and therefore common for students to chose to adhere to the uniform conventions of grades above theirs.
Okinami public schools have the following dress code: Students will wear grey clothing without other colors, excepting white or black, or distracting designs. Students are expected to wear straight-legged pants. Female students may wear knee-length straight or pleated skirts. Pants and skirts may be black. Shirts should have collars. Short-sleeves are permitted. Long-sleeved shirts should have cuffs. Undershirts of white or grey are permitted beneath the collared shirt. Grey sweaters or gakuran jackets are permitted over the collared shirt. Grey or black vests or sweater-vests are also permitted. Grades 7 - 9: Boys are permitted gakuran jackets or vests over the collared shirt. Girls are permitted sweaters or vests over the collared shirt. If wearing a skirt, the student should wear grey, white or black opaque tights, leggings or knee-high socks. Ties and scarves of grey, white or black are permitted. Students shall not wear distracting jewelry, hair ornaments or make-up. Male students whose hair is shoulder-length or longer shall tie it back. Outerwear including hats and gloves shall be left in the student's cubby. Students should have clean shoes to wear in school, especially if raining or snowy. Students shall wear closed-toed shoes. Shoes with lights, wheels or distracting designs are prohibited. Students are not permitted to dye their hair non-natural colors. For P.E. class, students should have an appropriate change of clothes. Clothes must be grey, white or black and may not have distracting designs. Shorts must be mid-thigh or longer. Clothing may not be skin-tight unless worn beneath an appropriate article. Close-toed, well-fitting shoes are required.
