Common Languages

Common is a language shared by all civilized races and many other intelligent beings (such as dragons). Accents and dialects differentiate the Common of a Vekas trader from that of a Mauvoy shepherd, and they might misunderstand idioms or cultural figures of speech, but they can both understand each other.   Dwarven is spoken primarily by dwarves, but many ancient technical documents detailing secrets of smithing, engineering, and miscellaneous craftsmanship are written in Dwarven. Many Vailun craftspeople—apprentices and masters alike—learn Dwarven for this reason.   Elven, the elegant language of elves, is the second most common language in Saekai (behind Common). It is widely used by academics, scholars, and those who consider themselves intelligent. Elven is well-suited towards prose, poetry, speeches, and debates alike.   Halfling is a language spoken by the diminutive humanoid halflings. Through the years, partly because of its plethora of words for specific goods, it has gained a reputation as a language of trade and commerce. Many Vekas traders speak Halfling as a second language specifically to do business in.

Uncommon Languages

Draconic is an incredibly complex and archaic language spoken by dragons. Although Draconic is very efficient for writing magical texts (indeed, many ancient magical tomes are written in Draconic), learning it requires fastidious dedication and study, and few other than wizards and arcane scholars ever master it.   Orcish is a language spoken by orcs, brutish humanoids with penchants for destruction and malice. Orcish is an appropriately brusque and guttural language, and most of those who acquire it do so only in order to communicate with tribes of orc raiders.

Elemental Languages

The elemental languages are spoken by beings of the extradimensional Elemental Planes, chiefly Mephits. Some adventurers seek out elemental languages in order to communicate with these entities, while others learn them due to a belief that they act as holy languages of some gods.   Aquan is the language of water, spoken by intelligent oceanic beings in addition to being a holy language of Lasang.   Auran is the language of air, understood by some flying beasts, but impossible for humans to replicate without special equipment.   Infernal is the language of fire, used to commune with spirits of flame.   Terran is the language of earth, a sign language revered by priests of Daeshi and some deep-dwelling creatures.

Rare and Unique Languages

Undercommon is a language rumored to be spoken by the inhabitants of vast subterranean caverns miles high and acres wide. Such caverns are only rumored to exist, and the scraps of what could be "Undercommon" brought back by adventurers could be considered a pidgin language at best.   Druidic is a secret language known only to druids. It is said to be a linguistic bridge that connects mortal minds with the power of the spirit world. However, no druid has ever agreed to teach an outsider the language, keeping its traits shrouded in mystery.   Sylvan is the language of the Fae, spoken by these fantastic—yet malicious—creatures and some nature spirits. Those who understand Sylvan are few and far between, but mortals who can communicate with these fickle beings have an advantage against them.
