Cymere Crystals

By convention, the small fragments of Cymere that weigh between 5 and 150 grams are called Cymere crystals. These crystals can be used as powerful personal-scale supplies of magical power.   A crystal can be used as a focus to increase the power of an individual's innate magic, to spontaneously manifest a magical effect, to power some arcane artifacts, or to temporarily enchant a weapon or armor. Most Cymere crystals can serve any of these functions, but some can only be used in certain contexts, and determining the difference requires an arcane scholar's help. Similarly, specific effects lent by the crystals vary from crystal to crystal; one may wreath a weapon in flames, while another may electrify the blade.   Once a Cymere crystal has been used, it loses its crystalline luster and stops functioning. In order to work once again, it must be touched to another Cymere crystal of the same or greater size. One crystal is rejuvenated, while the other loses its magic; this is a reversible process, so a lucky individual in possession of two crystals can choose which one's effect to use. Larger crystals are capable of recharging multiple smaller crystals, and Cymere Outcrops are known to be capable of recharging Cymere crystals infinitely.

Traits

When arcane scholars talk about Cymere crystals, they categorize them based on two elements: aspect and bent.   Aspect governs how a crystal can be used. As aforementioned, many crystals can be used to enchant weapons and armor, enhance a mage's abilities, or produce magic effects. These versatile crystals are said to have an omni aspect. Others can only perform some of these tasks, and their aspect describes this. Other than omni, possible aspects are enchantment (straightforward), invocation (manifesting magic effects), and binding (boosting the effects of innate magic).   Bent describes what a Cymere crystal can do in broad strokes. For example, if a crystal is known to be capable of coating a weapon in magical frost, manifesting an explosion of biting cold, or making armor immune to ice, its bent is cold or frost. Not all crystals are so straightforward, but bent gives an idea of what to expect when using one.   Unfortunately for those who find Cymere crystals, they do not fully reveal their traits until they are used, which depletes them. But recently, arcane scholars have learned how to analyze Cymere crystals and glean hints about their bent and aspect.
