The Ethereal Plane

The Ethereal Plane lies at the innermost layer of its planisphere, connected innately with the Elemental and Astral Planes, and it is known by a host of names that fail to truly understand its nature.   To understand the nature of the Ethereal Plane, one must understand that in its unrefined form, ethereal energy is the wildest form of magic, propagating into infinity in roaring rivers and surges and cycles, and it is only through careful guidance that it can be harnessed for constructive ends.

Feythane

When the planes converged, the pure Ethereal energies felt the influence of foreign Rays, catalysing the formation of those terrible beings the world knows as rulers of the Fey. These powerful entities stand like deities within their realm, waging battle against one another using foreign powers as playthings, empowering things as they please, learning to take new forms and delighting in the game of it.   Examples of these might be such figures as Queen Titania, the Queen of Air and Darkness, Old Puck, Oberon the Green Lord and others.

Courts of Fey

Two main divisions categorise the creatures that reside within the Courts of Fey, known as the feythfyl, otherwise mortal creatures empowered by Ethereal energies, and the feytyd, creatures formed from Ethereal energy directly. All of these creatures are called Fey and they include such things as elves, treants, swanmaidens, unicorns, hags, dryads, blink dogs, sprites, pixies, selkie, barghest, willowisps, and many, many more. Each Court is simply a contrivance, a formal acknowledgement of a relationship between multiple Feythane, Archfey, Great Spirits and Fey, and each is named when the Court is declared. A Court often forms around a Feythane, but is able to be called by any combination of powerful Fey.

The Seelie Court

The Seelie Court is dedicated to the use of ethereal magics to help mortalkind and make the natural world a peaceful, welcoming place.   The Seelie Fey have allied with gods of nature over the ages, and has found great success in the now weakened Sylvarimmond, and is currently fighting for control of the Selerimmond.

The Summer Court

The Summer Court is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the green lands of the world, and the intrigues of peace that maintain them.   Surrounding the sun-crowned Queen Laeriar of the Summerland, the Summer Court became the traditional enemy of the Winter Court for a time, after relations soured several thousand years ago. As Helchuin has been trapped in a prison by the wood elves, this conflict has been largely forgiven if not forgotten by the two Courts.

The Unseelie Court

The Unseelie Court is dedicated to the use of ethereal magics to harm mortalkind and make the natural world a savage wilderness that will protect itself.   The Unseelie Fey have allied with gods of nature over the ages, as well as gods of death and darkness, and have found great success in the hinterlands of Perilion, and is currently fighting for control of the Sea of Green Staves in Tabor.

The Winter Court

The Winter Court is dedicated to the preparation and command of warriors and armies against the enemies of the world, and of the lords that conduct them.   Surrounding the frost-crowned Helchuin the Winter-King, the Winter Court became the traditional enemy of the Summer Court for a time, after relations soured several thousand years ago. As Helchuin has been trapped in a prison by the wood elves, this conflict has been largely forgiven if not forgotten by the two Courts.

The Court Below

The Court Below is dedicated to the advancement of life in the dark depths below the earth, and is currently embroiled in conflict over the use of harmful magics in developing the unique environments there. They are not welcoming of people at this time, but tolerate deep elves.   Surrounding Hwandaen the Carrion King, the Court Below seeks little else than physical expansion of its 'forests' underground, incorporating algae, mushrooms and lichen, and taking corpses to feed the march of their spores. The King has the loyalty of most mushroom fey, as well as many underworld fey such as the bucca, the bluecap and the coblynau.
