Tarils (Man)

In the fortified cloud plains of Tarilat, the Antil peoples formed a highly xenophobic society dedicated to the preservation of their species during the heights of the Malari invasion, and in the centuries of cooling conflict thereafter. Dedication to security and common needs before all else created a system of benevolent despotism as the matriarch of the Tarilat interior took complete control to ensure the safety of the Taril people. In centuries to come, contact with Solari elves provided the beleaguered state with new learning, trade and above all, magic, which would fortify their earthly borders and allow them to thrive using their practiced disciplines of thought and philosophy and their new magical knowledge to provide great luxury and riches.   While their numbers remain relatively small compared to other extant peoples such as the Antarils, Suranils, and Vigils, the common quality of life is far superior, and the literacy and skill proficiency rate among the Tarils vastly outstrips their distant cousins.

Naming Traditions

Unisex names

Names among the Tarils are descriptive and personal, often referring to poetry, imagery or other cultural or academic symbols. One name is chosen by the mother, one by the father, and these are arranged around the name of the place of birth, and that location is considered to be that person's heart.   Examples;
  • Tien Arak Nlaac
  • Yaat Arak Xochico
  • Arut Temon Qatoc
  • Seulgi Jang Areum
  • Saraya Eztli Cheol

Additionally, honour names are awarded by the state for personal achievements, recorded as a post script, and titles of rank or repute are recorded as a pre script.   Examples of pre scripts;
  • Atla - Given to female members of academic or magical councils.
  • Nahu - Given to male members of academic or magical councils.
  • Nem - Given to a supervisor or immediate manager.
  • Tlatoani - Given to advisors of the matriarchal ruler, the Ciuah Tlatoani.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Taril beauty ideals are based on the union of humanity with unearthly beauty, and the pursuit of the unattainable, transformed by the new horizons afforded to them through dialogue with the Solari elves.   In architecture, this translates in bright, open spaces, ponds and water gardens, bright natural light and warm, dry stone, embellished not with local copper and wood, but with gold alloys, glass and jewels.   In clothing, this means decorative pieces that splay outwards, coronal feather headdresses, wide, drooping collars adorned with fabric tassels, bell sleeves swathed in long gauze and lace, broad decorations that resemble wings, and long, flowing lengths of cloth that pools and trails like a train.   In cosmetics, this means bright colours and glittering appliques, rouged battle-scars, fruit-dyed lips, painted bald heads for women and long, beaded hair for men.

Gender Ideals

Male and female genders are recognised by Tarils, but no particular roles are thrust upon them.   The key difference is the female capacity to fall pregnant, which carries a great deal of social baggage in Taril society. Due to their limited physical space, the state enforces population control measures that have been embraced by females as a means to achieve a more stable society as a whole.   Once a female has decided she intends to bear a child, she seeks the approval of the local government, who are provided with allotted totals by census officials from the Ciuah Tlatoani, the Advisor of the Many. Once she has approval to proceed, she selects a male consort, and enters into a pact with him, during which the two are permitted only to have sex with one another (a rule that does not apply to Taril society as a whole).   If a child is born without this approval, they are required to be sponsored by one of several organisations, who maintain their own census totals - the Way of Crane and Water, the Watchers Below the Mountain, a Merchant of the Sun who vows to cover every expense, or a Cloud Circle, a group of individuals that intend to depart the mountain and establish a research conclave elsewhere. If none of these groups will accept the child, the state will either require the mother to leave Tarilat, or require the murder of the infant. This extreme situation occurs rarely, as the Way and the Watchers can be dangerous vocations, and the Merchants and Circles frequently have need of more hands to lighten their load.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is a thing of convenience and attraction for Tarils, with polygamy and casual relationships being the norm. The exception to this rule is during procreation, when a male/female pair will be legally bound to monogamy for the duration of the pregnancy. Family and clan bonds are considered less important than the relationship one has with the community to which you were born.
