Fatherland of Zarmuda
Far in the east past the Sea of Grass is the Fatherland. All that lives can be traced to the hallowed grounds of Zarmuda. The God Kings rule from Heaven at the very top. From those heights they command the admiration of their followers bellow. Their power over the world is great but distant. Their authority unquestioned.
Three hundred years ago their wayward children, the Darcassians, fell from grace to pursue their own earthly aims. The God Kings permit it.
Structure
The God Kings rule over all under Heaven. Ruling the Fatherland in their stead is the Statesman, one of the original God Kings.
Culture
The Fatherland has a strict hierarchy. The bottom of society are the Aspirants, people driven to embark on their quest for spiritual perfection. They travel through all the tiers until they may stand before the God Kings themselves. All aspirants strive to gaze upon the radiant faces of their makers. Those worthy to join the highest tiers, with hopes of becoming Gods themselves, become Ascended. Those whose spiritual fiber is not strong enough are cast from Heaven where they may begin their journey anew.
All resources and power are controlled by the God Kings. It is only with their permission that they allow any contact with the outside world or any thing as blasphemous as technological progress.
History
Zarmuda is the birthplace of all other races. By the God Kings decree, all races were permitted to go forth and multiply across the world. Only the most devout, the Zarmudans, stayed with their makers. As the oldest nation in the world and backed by the God Kings the Fatherland of Zarmuda is a place of great temples, towering mountains, and raging storms.
Three centuries ago Zarmuda was torn asunder in a war between the God Kings. The God Kings grew jealous of each other and waged a bloody civil war. Distracted, the Darcassians under their Martocrat took the opportunity to split from the Fatherland.
Weakened, the God Kings lacked the power to bring their wayward children back into the fold. In present day the Fatherland remains in the far east, detached from the world's earthly affairs. Detached but some say still shaping the world.
Pilgrims continue their dangerous journey to spiritual perfection. Their aim remains the same, to gaze upon the faces of their makers and to ascend. Scribes continue to write down the decrees and histories of their Gods. Monks sit in meditation, quietly contemplating the divine.
Demography and Population
"All who seek enlightenment and holiness are welcome. Yet they shed the prisons of their race and ethnicity. Here in the Garden of the Gods all become Zarmudan. We are united in common faith and the hope of ascending to be one with our Gods." "We do not discriminate as our wayward brothers and sisters of Darcassia do. They have fallen and have become worldly beings. We pity them. They lose out on so much that the God Kings have gifted to us." "So come to our lands believers. There is a place for you here, all who seek holiness." Missionary of Zarmuda delivering a sermon.
Military
The Fatherland is defended by legions of the Zarmudan Vennacti. Besides force of arms there are the God Kings themselves, able to make miracles or to smite their enemies off the face of the earth. Oftentimes the land itself has deterred invasion. Zarmuda is ringed by a large mountain range. This range is further reinforced with fortresses and divine guardians who protect the cultivated, peaceful lands beyond.
In the aftermath of the War of Zealots and Martyrs the God Kings created the Sea of Grass. This living sea challenges all who attempt to cross it. Only those of pure intent or deep faith survive the journey.
Foreign Relations
With the Uribasan Mountains and the Sea of Grass as a buffer, the Fatherland of Zarmuda and its divine rulers have been quiet since the War of Zealots and Martyrs concluded. The quiet is unnerving though as Zarmudan missionaries continue going forth to spread the word of the God Kings.
No one bothers the missionaries and by all accounts the missionaries are harmless. Darcassians on the other hand find any Zarmudan frustrating and difficult to tolerate. Especially once they start preaching. Clashes have happened between Darcassians and Zarmudans, with missionaries being thrown out of Darcassian towns. People hold their breaths, expecting a sudden outbreak of war between the Fatherland and Darcassia. When no such war happens people breathe a sigh of relief.
Sects
There are different organizations united in their faith in the God Kings. These orders are dedicated to either spreading the faith through missionaries, study and research into the God Kings and their inscrutable will, or training priests for their duties as preachers and leaders.
