Spanreed Stories

“I thought you’d appreciate some stories, Brightness ” the spanreed's scribe remarks in a practiced and stylish hand, pausing only briefly before continuing, “To lighten the mood among your companions and remind you the world still turns beyond the chasms.”

Tensions may be thick as chull sweat in the warcamps, but that hasn’t stopped the Kholin and Sadeas houses from pouring their vanity into the arena.

The annual Grand Dueling Championship is fast approaching, with House Kholin fielding none other than Adolin Kholin himself—inmaculate hair, inmaculate reputation, and inmaculate armor. The crowds are already whispering odds.

More intriguing, however, is the return of Brightlord Kalanor Pellinor, newly arrived from skirmishes and widely hailed as a disciplined and calculating duelist. Rumors suggest he’s here not just to compete—but to win, and to measure just how deserved Adolin´s reputation is.

One anonymous arena bookmaker was quoted saying, “It’s like watching two highstorms build across the Plains. When they clash, even the shards will flinch.”

A darker tale for the firelight. At least four bodies have turned up in the past ten days across both Sadeas and Kholin territories. Silent throats, hidden blood, and no witnesses.

The killings are too precise for drunken squabbles. Some whisper of assassins. Others speak of blame-games—that someone seeks to ignite hostilities once more between houses already antagonistic.

Highprince Dalinar has called for restraint and investigation. Highprince Sadeas has called for retribution.

If it continues, war may break out not in the chasms, but in the kitchens and corridors of the camps.

Highprince Sebarial, always the unexpected coin in the goblet, has announced a trade and diplomacy initiative with the less-hostile Parshendi tribes—those not directly engaged in fighting.

The proposal includes joint farming projects, resource exchanges, and a symbolic diplomatic caravan to be sent into Parshendi territory. The initiative has been met with everything from scoffing to horror, with Brightlords decrying it as “treason in silk robes.”

Still, Sebarial has influence—and coin. And some whispers suggest he’s already recruited a handful of free agents for the journey.

Something is changing in the warcamps. Perhaps the winds will blow a new unexpected direction.

News travels fast, and fury faster.

Captain Ralezon Thanaril returned from his expedition looking like a beaten hound, void of glory and full of excuses. Brightness Ialai Sadeas was said to have shattered a decanter upon hearing he had lost both control of the mission and the lives of valuable functionaries.

Her fury has seen him demoted to low-command logistics—grain and grease, as the saying goes. He now manages chull feed distribution for the Sadeas camp, and has been heard muttering of revenge and retribution.

Most interestingly, Ialai has reportedly taken an interest in seeing the survivors returned safely. However coniving she might be, it appears she did display a smudge of emotion at the tought of her cousin becoming chasmfiend feed.

“I hope these tales give you both perspective and comfort, Brightness,” the scribe adds, “and perhaps your companions will find distraction in the fates of others. Of course, I shall pass along any new developments. And I hope you will keep me informed of your own discoveries.”
