Session 21: Sodden Hold
General Summary
The Ratcatchers spend a couple more days in downtime, most of them working for some pocket change. On the end of their third day staying at the Crooked House the Ratcatchers are spending some time in the bar having a late dinner and drinks. Kretzle chooses to call it early however and heads to bed. Not long after that Kretzle actually returns downstairs. He ends up walking up to Tarquin Shortstone and stabs him in the chest. Masari quickly darts forward and grapples Kretzle while Fedi jumps in to save Tarquin. Axto tries to call for Kretzle who he thinks might still be upstairs. Moments later I'is heads upstairs to find Kretzle. As Fedi manages to do the emergency first aid on Tarquin she gets a better look at the Kretzle being grappled by Masari and notices that something is not quite right about him. She quickly declares this is the work of a fellow shapeshifter.
When Kretzle does return downstairs and now there are two of them, the Kretzle being grappled by Masari quickly turns back into his true form and attempts to escape by killing Masari. Masari and the rest of the Ratcatchers quickly knock the now apparent doppleganger unconscious. They also find a strange key in the pockets of this doppelganger, it is a key for an old warehouse known as Sodden Hold located on the Drumminster River. When the guards arrive they quickly question the party and clear the Crooked House so they can investigate the crime. Meanwhile our Ratcatchers decide to look into why this Doppelganger was trying to frame them for murder, their only clue is the key to Sodden Hold so they travel there to start their own investigation.
When they arrive at Sodden Hold they find a chain locked door that fits the key they had found. As they travel into the main warehouse they are attacked by three mimics. One of these mimics during the attack almost kill and swallow Fedi, thankfully the rest of the Ratcatchers come to her aid. As they search the room they see a catwalk above and two doors to their right. One door is locked which ends up leading into an old abandoned office. Searching it finds a magical ring. The other door leads to a ladder that unfortunately is in bad shape. When Axto attempts to climb the ladder it breaks sending him tumbling to the ground. Masari quickly pulls out a grappling hook and sets it above allowing our Ratcatchers to climb up the rope. As they work their way across the catwalk they find themselves at a door, on the other side of this door is a set of stairs leading down to multiple treasure chests. Most of them just carry basic personal effects but they find a magical cloak and a magical pouch within the chests. They pocket these for now before moving through the door at the base of the stairs.
On the other side of the door they find multiple jail cells. In one such cell is a man who appears dead. I'is performs magical healing on the man, who is identified as one of the local tax collectors of Cloudbreach. However it appears the poor man's mind has already been broken and I'is is unable to heal that. In another cell is a young elven woman who is quite combative with the Ratcatchers, she thinks our Ratcatchers are just the doppelgangers in another disguise to mess with her. She ends up spitting in Fedi's face during their confrontation. In another cell are 2 humanoids who quickly ask to be let free. However when the party does not do so, their cell door opens revealing they are actually doppelgangers in disguise! As I'is casts magical darkness the party is quickly thrown into a blind vs the blind battle causing the battle to last longer than it should have. However also in doing so manages to save her friends from taking multiple deadly hits from the doppelgangers' longswords. Now they must head through the next door to see where it leads. In doing so they may discover why doppelgangers want them dead. And why they are impersonating officials of the city of Cloudbreach.
