Session 06: The Haunted Mill

General Summary

Sakuya and Glop were gripped by unsettling visions as they went about their day, an effect seemingly tied to the strange red coins they carried. Vivid images and distorted whispers clawed at their senses, leaving them momentarily disoriented and deeply unsettled. But despite the eerie experience, they pressed on alongside their companions.   The Ratcatchers made their way to the water mill, a place steeped in rumors of a haunting. Careful investigation quickly revealed several troubling clues—a dark stain of blood hidden beneath a pile of flour, smoke damage on the waterwheel, and scorch marks suggesting a fire within the mill. Among the debris, they discovered Talis’s journal, where the miller lamented his struggles to keep the failing mill operational under the harsh oversight of Leonardo.   Their search led them to a patch of disturbed earth, where they uncovered the twisted remains of Talis himself, a grisly confirmation of foul play. Understanding the restless spirit's anguish, the Ratcatchers performed an impromptu exorcism, calming the vengeful ghost. Armed with the truth, they confronted Leonardo, persuading him to offer monetary compensation to Talis’s mother as a way to grant the spirit peace. Sakuya, however, lied convincingly, ensuring Leonardo believed this was the only way to resolve the haunting.   With the mystery of the mill laid to rest, the Ratcatchers took some time to patch their wounds, share a quiet moment, and discuss their next steps. Soon enough, they turned their focus to a new task—the bandit hideout rumored to lie southwest of Youmaneff.   The trek took two hours along a rough path that wound toward a large, rocky hill crowned by a solitary tower. Investigating the base of the hill, the Ratcatchers stumbled upon a camp filled with the bodies of bandits—each slain by blunt force trauma, most likely the work of a hammer.   Scouting the hill further, they discovered a cave with a locked door. Tamla made quick work of the lock, and the Ratcatchers ventured inside, finding a grand hall dominated by a deep, dark well. Testing its depth with a light-enchanted stone revealed a seemingly bottomless shaft.   They moved carefully through the chamber, eventually hearing Dwarven voices behind a northern door. The gruff tones spoke of raiding nearby farms—proof enough of ill intent. The Ratcatchers chose to strike first, bursting through the door and clashing with a group of hostile, gray-skinned dwarves. The battle was swift and brutal, with the Ratcatchers emerging victorious. A quick search of the fallen yielded a small amount of coin.   Taking a moment to recover, the Ratcatchers looked to the shadowed passages ahead, ready to continue their exploration of the bandit hideout and whatever other dangers it might conceal.
