It is unpleasant to see people mixing in society with customs not their own. Descendants of the Kami should be like peaceful streams, each keeping to their own beds. Such disagreeable scenes arise when one does not know how to act! How much better when we all keep to our places in the Celestial Order.— Otomo Takuya
It is ridiculous to see grown-ass descendants of the Kami who can't figure out how to learn new customs. Such disa-fucking-greeable scenes they cause with their whining when someone doesn't bow to quite the right angle in their presence. How much better when I kick his tiny, perfumed ass.— Moto Tsenguun
The Unicorn are unique in the Empire. Then called the Ki-rin, they left for nearly eight centuries, headed by Shinjo herself when they departed. When they returned from the Burning Sands, they brought with them foreign customs, foreign foods, foreign technology... and foreign people. The Unicorn had married and bred while outside the Empire, and even gained the allegiance of an entire tribe -- the Ujik-hai, who would become the Moto family.
As a result, this Clan has many way that are not only unfamiliar, but abhorrent to Rokugani sensibilities. The Unicorn eat butter and drink milk, which Rokugani say makes them stink. They wear leather and fur, an impure act by native religious standards. Among themselves, they even shake hands as a greeting. Many retain their nomadic ways, living in yurts instead of houses of wood or stone. They tend to be far more receptive to new ideas than any other group in Rokugan.
Much to the dismay of many, though, the Emperor clearly sees a use for the Unicorn (and their
gaijin allies, goods, and trade routes). Not to mention their horses.
For it was the mighty cavalry of the Unicorn that made the first impression on their new, old home, blowing through Crab lines like a thundering storm in their haste to get out of the Shadowlands. The Crab have never forgotten this... for good or ill.
