Rin Kuni

Rin Kuni

Rin is a Kuni Witch Hunter living currently in Kyuden Hida. Socially awkward and reclusive, Rin prefers her studies to socializing with her peers. Recently, she has been investigating ways to halt or even reverse the taint.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Rin has a slight, unimposing build - almost willowy, belying hours spend bent over books and attending to studies rather than in the practice yard.

Identifying Characteristics

Typical of all Kuni Witch Hunters, Rin wears kabuki-like facepaint. This serves a double-purpose of helping to hide the markers of the taint that clings to her - notably her deathly-pale skin and darkness about her eyes.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Though Rin grew up a peasant, when she was five years old, she was adopted into the Kuni family by Kuni Izumi due to her innate talent for sensing the taint. Since then, she has devoted her life to the study of the Shadowlands, Maho, and Taint as a Kuni Witch Hunter.

Education

Due to her unorthodox integration into the samurai caste, Rin started her education late. She threw herself into her studies to try to compensate, but her knowledge of the arts and finer points of ettiquette are lacking as a result of her humble origins.

Morality & Philosophy

A scientist at heart, Rin believes that the source of power and ultimately victory over the forces of Jigoku is knowledge. She feels that this pursuit is more important than anything else, including her own well-being, as only through this pursuit will she prove worthy of the opportunity given to her by Kuni Izumi.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Rin credits Kuni Izumi for giving her life purpose and meaning. She feels an intense sense of loyalty to her and wants nothing more than to make her proud and prove to her that the chance she was given is not wasted.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Rin has always demonstrated strong instincts in detecting the taint, which made her an exceptional candidate to be a Kuni Witch Hunter. She posessess a strong mental accumen and a driving curiosity about the Shadowlands and Maho.   Growing up a peasant, Rin was deprived of the culture that comes inherent to many samurai. She feels out of place with those who grew up in the samurai caste and lacks appreciation for art/culture, etc. She struggles with interacting with her peers and often comes off as aloof or distant.

Social

Contacts & Relations

  • Rin is the adopted daughter of Kuni Izumi. Though she is generally reclusive, she still keeps frequent contact with Kuni Izumi through written missives.
  • Rin has served as a tutor to Hida Ryoma, teaching him about the shadowlands, taint, and maho.

A Kuni Witch Hunter from humble beginnings and thrust unexpectedly into the world of samurai.

Month 1 Excerpts

It was decided that before the year is out, Ryoma will embark upon his genpukku. I can only hope he will be prepared before then. It sounds like they will be sending some people with him – a sensible decision, considering the importance that he makes it through this alive. It seems the only person truly decided on, however, is Bayushi Hansuke – they say it will be a good opportunity for him to prove his goodwill. I can’t help but question the wisdom of this decision, though. I worry that if his intentions are less than pure, sending him with Ryoma will only make it all too easy for him to ensure that Ryoma does not return and blame it on the Shadowlands. Hopefully whoever else is selected is someone a bit more trustworthy, and I will need to make sure that Ryoma is duly cautious, not just of the Scorpion, but of everyone claiming to be his ally...   I attended a training session with Suzuha and Ryoma. At first I was just curious about her monastic order, but upon spending time with her, I sensed something off about her. A spiritual inbalance. To my surprise, she took it upon herself to speak with me first. She was exceedingly open about the issue, even when I assured her that what I sensed was not Shadowlands Taint. She explained this condition she has - Past Life Regression she calls it. She is connected to a past life of hers. She said she was a Courtier that seduced a monk. I don't fully understand it, but I saw the effects of it before my very eyes. She took on the mannerism of this past life, and spoke in an accent I do not recognize. Suzuha, it seems, was left at a monastery, abandoned by her parents because of her condition. The monastic path has given her a way to manage her symptoms. Though this wasn't really the answer I was looking for, it is enlightening nonetheless. I do wonder if there is a way to induce such a state, could a descendant of one of our great heroes find a way to channel them so to speak - think of what could be gained.   Suzuha herself, in spite of her inbalance, does not seem to be a threat to Ryoma. We will continue to watch her, but I feel comforted by her candor, and I would be lying if I didn't admit to feeling some amount of kinship with her. Perhaps it is because our stories are two sides of the same coin, inverses of each other. While Suzuha was discarded for the potential she held, I was chosen for mine. While Suzuha has pursued a path of enlightenment for mastery of herself and her own growth, I have chosen a path whose only goal is the betterent of my clan. In these differences, I find we are much the same.

1152, 15th of the Tiger

I had been dreading this festival all week. I couldn't eat all day because my stomach was in knots. And at first, it was as bad as I thought it would be - worse even. I fear I will never learn to socialize with the samurai the way I'm supposed to. Perhaps I am simply not meant to, perhaps it is simply my curse to bear. I thought I was going to have to leave early, but then by a stroke of luck, I ran into Ikoma Kenji. I never would've expected to find an ally in the Lion - dare I call him a friend? He's not like my other patients I'm watching. He seems undaunted by the reality of his situation. How can he laugh and eat and enjoy his life when he's so deeply touched by the taint? How, when he is consumed by such darkness, can he be a source of light? And yet he is, against all odds. And tonight, he was my rescuer when he invited me to join him. I was, in the end, actually able to enjoy some elements of the evening, particularly the display from the Guardians of the Garden. Their feats were truly awe-inspiring. And it was a pleasure to get Hida Ryoma's insights into the various players at court. Gods know I can't keep track of them all, myself. It was a bit disappointing to have so many bow out of the duels, I was particularly keen on seeing Yoritomo fight. Perhaps I will ask him for a demonstration at another time.
