Ruined Lands

In short, the Lands consumed by Ruin.

Seen as the corrosive stain upon the face of the planet, the Ruined Lands swarm with uncountable horrors and absolute nightmares to the senses.

It is still discussed between specialists to this day if the Ruined Lands are either a multitude of entities afflicted by the same warped infestation, or all part of one single creature working as a twisted hive-mind. Some would argue it's both.

Geography

Localized in the Dawn-ward parts of the small continent of Barbosia, the Ruined Lands are held back from their ravenous expansionism by the Agos Border, which is maintained by the Garth Governorate and supported by the United Provinces.
The landmass of this region is mutable to an untrackable extent, making it difficult to discern how many forms it can take.

Ecosystem

Its ever-changing form turn the ecosystems of the Ruined Lands into equivalents to any and all others recorded, while also maintaining itself unique and hard to compare to anything else. Some suggest this works as some sort of defense mechanism.

A consistent factor in the way the Ruined Lands operates, is its relentless spread that can only be stopped by having every aspect of its form being paid attention to. As long as Ruin is perceived it won't advance any further. However, this is not as simple as it sounds, for if even one small piece or detail of its form, smell, sounds, locality, warmth, solidity, etc, is not actively noticed, it can still advance. For that reason, specially engineered sentinels called Watchers are installed across the entire perimeter of the Agos Border as to halt its spread. It is believed that the thin veil between Heir and the Eternal Link is the reason as to why Ruin is so hampered by perception, as its been shown it cannot withstand the Shift.

Ecosystem Cycles

No pattern has been found in the mutation of the land and creatures within the Ruined Lands, leading researchers to understand it as random, or intentionally confusing.

Localized Phenomena

A multitude of non-euclidean phenomenon have been recorded by Outriders when exploring the Ruined Lands, from spacial distortions, time-perception anomalies, and cataclysmic forces held within contained environments, to terror-inducing psychic maelstroms. Many of which have gotten a multitude of well-trained specialists to be assimilated.

Fauna & Flora

The dwellers of the Ruined Lands, referred by some as Whispers, from simple plants like grass, to more complex organisms like alien-looking animals and other anomalous organic masses, have all been registered as being sapient. Although all of these inhabitants at different times show differing behaviors and levels of aggression and intelligence, most have shown signs of deception or cunning, while others show forms of organized presentations or tactics as a response to a variety of interactions.

While not all entities within the Ruined Lands are outwardly hostile, all are considered extremely dangerous and unpredictable.

Natural Resources

Stabilized "Ruin Cells" are collected and processed by the Garth to produce their currency, the Aaran, which also supposedly works as a charm to ward off Whispers. These Cells are also studied for other possible uses by the Seers and other researchers under the protection of the Rube Council.

History

Being the all assimilating force that it is, it is believed that Heir was once almost entirely consumed by Ruin, the Break of Dawn being the end of its last reign.

On 1256 ER (Era of Remembrance) Ruin had seemingly sprouted anew, ushering in the Asridian Exodus and prompting the mobilization of the Ruiners (Outriders) to quell its advances as Khantua's Garth prepared the main line of the defense for the years to come.
