Duo Abilities
In the chaos of war, rebellion, and survival, bonds are forged not just through shared struggle—but through resonance. When two kindred spirits act as one, they can unleash power far greater than the sum of their parts.
What are Duo Abilities?
Duo Abilities are powerful, cinematic maneuvers or effects that require two characters to act in unison. When both characters expend their action on the same turn, they can trigger a unique, personalized ability that reflects their shared history, synergy, or combined talents. They are primarily to reward synergies and cooperation between players.
Requirements
Willing Pair: Both players must be willing participants in the ability and declare its use simultaneously on their turns (same round). Shared Intent: The players must have the same intent for use of the skill, or at least one that does not contradict the effect of the other's intent. Cooldown: Once used, a Duo Ability cannot be used again until 3 long rests have passed (equivalent to once every few major events). Approval Required: Each Duo Ability is homebrewed and requires collaboration with the DM to develop, based on the characters’ abilities, themes, and shared story.
Mechanics
Activation: Both characters must expend their Action on the same turn and be within a range appropriate to the effect (determined case by case). Effect: Effects can vary dramatically—ranging from a devastating joint attack, a shared defensive ward, synchronized spellcasting, etc. Balance: The DM will help craft each ability to ensure it’s potent but fair, with mechanical or narrative flair tailored to the duo.
Designing Your Own
Players are encouraged to approach the DM to co-create a Duo Ability as their story progresses. These are rewards for strong character development and creative synergy. Not every duo will start with one—but through RP, mutual trust, or shared goals, they can earn one.
Duo Abilities can evolve, too—becoming more dramatic or powerful over time, especially as characters level or experience major narrative milestones.
Example: “Sunder & Singe” – Barbarian & Fire Mage
The barbarian shatters an enemy’s defenses with a thunderous blow, just as the mage channels fire through the exposed crack.
Effect: If the melee attack lands, the target’s AC is reduced by 2 for 1 round, and a firebolt automatically hits as a follow-up with critical damage.
