The Gauntlet

People in the Infinite Loop are already weird. So when a rumor started about an area south west of the eye of the storm which caused those nearby to go insane, it was kind of par for the course. But when even Brainers would fall to their knees and starting clawing at the hardened crater dirt while muttering something about having to save 'The Gauntlet', that's . . . well that's actually really weird.

The gauntlet lays deep within the Earth's crust. How it got there, nobody knows, but thank the stars it was buried so deep, otherwise it would call out to a lot more people on the surface. Those stuck within its trance are cursed to dig as hard and as fast as they can, bloody fingernails and starvation be damned. They usually last for a couple of days before dropping dead from fatigue.

Recently, the curse has been able to draw in fewer people. Those travelling the Infinite Loop see the twenty foot hole left by its victims and quickly decide to take another route to their destination. This has made the Gauntlet even more aggressive towards those who do fall prey to it.

A curious blacksmith attempted to fashion a gauntlet similar to those described by the mad men. It was then presented to three victims and they ending up eating it, then the black smith, then each other.
