Spirit of the Rabbits
When the sky is clear and the fog from the falls begins to dissipate, a glowing rabbit can be seen hiding between the ferns. Its beady eyes watch you as you approach it, carefully. Nose twitching, it begins to periscope in your direction, as if beckoning you to come near. Then, suddenly, as if sensing danger, it hops away, fast - sprinting across the fields.
You follow it, entranced, as it leaps over wells of mud and piles of rubble spilled across the ground. Its fur continues to glow, a ghostly bluish white. It looks so soft, so innocent. It turns its head to look back in your direction, as if checking to make sure you’re still following.
Then it dashes away into the distance. You were already struggling to keep up. Were rabbits always this quick? It seems impossible to catch up. You slow down, out of breath. The fog creeps up around you. You’re surrounded by a field of plants. Herbs maybe. Something rustles. You spin around, in search of the source.
You’re nervous now. You feel at a disadvantage, your body is exposed, nothing to protect you, to hide you. Just an open field.
You feel eyes watching you. You squint into the darkness. Is that a rabbit? The same one you were following? To the left, another set of eyes. And below, yet another. Slowly you spin around and realize you’re surrounded.
Thumping.
They’re all thumping now, in terrifying unison. Do rabbit cults exist? You’ve heard of an animal kingdom up in West Rons, so maybe it’s not as far fetched.
Your heart beat races.
The thumping continues as the rabbits enclose you, moving closer.
You can’t escape… Wait, can you? They’re just rabbits, small creatures… prey animals, aren’t they? Why not? Just run away and trample them. Or shoot at them, anything, something!
No. Your body won’t let you. You can’t move. You’re trapped.
Once of them hops slowly to your feet, staring at you.
The thumping stops.
Silence.
The wind blows and gently sways the plants around.
The calm before the storm.
After moments that seem like hours, it finally happens. Like a wave, they all lunge at you. Rip into you, tear you apart. Their teeth are so strong, they instantly pierce through you. Using their claws, they dig into your skin, shredding your body into pieces. Ripping into you, all you feel is pain as you cry out into the darkness.
There’s no one to save you.
Summary
