Salamandertail

It tastes terrible so it's astounding that any individual was desperate enough to try eating eat, but of course someone has. And they kept eating it. Most likely it was desperation - there's not much in the Char for a normal human. The amphibious people control most of the resources, and even if they didn't it would still be tough to find suitable food and shelter in this district. But as time passed, he found he became less and less different from them. He could traverse the water without a boat, but not at the efficiency that the native people could. He had a stronger intuition for catching fish, and sometimes felt a connection to them. Though, he was still human. He thought maybe it was something in the water, so he drank until he couldn't stand it. He started losing his power as the days passed, catching less and less fish and unable to spend as much time beneath the surface. So he returned to eating what he called Salamandertail, a mutated form of Cattail that stands out against the colors of the shore with its bright crimson hue. Another week passed of eating this wretched plant, and finally, FINALLY, he could be one with the water again as he was before. This story also serves as a warning, though, as it is rumored that if you eat too much Salamandertail, the change can become permanent. Not quite human, but not an amphibious person either. Instead, a freak to both societies, who can't talk to man or even fish of his woes to dull the pain of loneliness that comes from being ostracized by the rest of the world.
