Giger Counters
To find a Geiger counter in this dead world is not hard, many expected to be wandering nuclear landscapes. But the Giger counters are something else entirely.
Named after a prominent if disturbing pre-war artist, the Giger counters are innately tuned into the natural maelstrom of the world. Where these counters would attempt to detect background radiation, they now chirp and whine when in the presence of the Rocpocalypse's many unnatural occurrences. From oncoming storms, to oddly linked individuals, and even the occasional cursed can of tuna-fish, a Giger counter is able to separate the supernatural from the mundane.
And that is what makes these items so heavily sought after. Since Giger Counters are themselves somehow attuned with the maelstrom, there is no way to industrialize the process and the only Giger counters are derived from preexisting Geiger counters that have been changed in some way. And these devices can be completely irreplaceable in the Rocpocalypse, able to warn their users of unnatural occurrences and people.
The Giger counters however have their own quirks as well, as most seem to be in some way aware of their own surroundings. While not truly sentient, the Giger counter has been known to turn itself on in the presence of increased maelstrom activity, and has even be said to whisper useful advice and charms on the occasion rather than the typical chirping the device is known for.
Indeed, for those travelling into areas of the Rocpocalypse where the maelstrom is king, a Giger counter is an essential tool that can mean the difference between life and death. Now if only the acquisition of one is also a matter of life and death as well.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
