Treacherous waves
"... help!" "Listen, someone is calling for help, we must have forgotten some people!" "What? No, I'm sure there was nobody left on the beach. We can't go now, the wave is closing in!" "Stay here if you prefer, I'm going back!"
He never returned. We learned only later about treacherous waves, and their ability to mimic human speech. Even worse, they can project a silhouette similar to that of a small person, easily mistaken for a child. Otherwise, they are pools of rainbowy water slightly buried in the sand so as to not been seen until too late. When their victim comes close enough, the trap activates and they grab it, looking to drown the caring rescuer.
The worst thing about it is that you just have to guess that they are treacherous waves, and not a genuine cry for help. No matter which is your main tongue, you will hear a familiar voice calling you out in a language you expect them to speak, or yours by default. I fear that they eventually drive us to become heartless monsters who ignore people in need, for fear of falling into a trap.
