The Diresaur

One-thousand years ago, a group of brave heroes banded together and faced a beast that had ravaged the Pridelands. This creature was known as the Diresaur - a monumental beast that could swallow a Leonin whole. The Diresaur had fearsome claws, teeth the size of swords, a tail covered in deadly spikes, and two massive horns atop its head. Its hide was said to be tougher than stone, bouncing away even magic. The Diresaur was monstrous and night unstoppable, but the stalwart might of the leonin heroes united was able to overcome it.   The heroes carved the beast apart and each took a piece of it as proof of what they'd achieved - its claws, horns, talons, teeth, skull, spikes, tail, and ribs. They returned to their homelands to found their own prides, and the pieces of the Diresaur become icons of this heroic founding. To this day, the image of the full creature is seen on banners, statuary, and frescos across the Pridelands; most commonly locked in battle with one of the ancestral heroes. The prides founded by those heroes feature the iconography of their specific spoils just as frequently. In Pride Greymane, for example, the horns of the beast are preserved and placed above the ruler's throne, and shields and flags used by the pride's military feature two crossed horns. Pride Duskfang has used the design of the Diresaur's skullcap for military helmets for hundreds of years, and the royal family is said to still have the skull stored away someplace secret.   Children reenact the battle between the legendary heroes and the Diresaur; epic poems, plays, ballads, and art are made depicting the might of the heroes, but also the might of the Diresaur itself. When a new leader is crowned, even in prides not associated with the legendary battle, the new leader invokes the image of the Diresaur to the gathered crowd. It serves as a reminder of the raw power of the natural World, but also how it can be overcome by uniting as one.
