The Magic in the Ring World

The gods of Chaos, outcast from the gods of light and the gods of darkness, are the source of Arcane energy in the Ring World. Of course, all the gods can convey their blessings as they see fit to anyone whom they deem worthy. And it is well known, the worshipers of nature can divine a certain source of power that some call "magic." However, the very powerful arcane arts were introduced to the inhabitants of the Ring World by the gods of Chaos.
Upon the surface of the large planet and within the ring, the gods of Chaos secretly infused their powers into the very elements of the world. They chose specific crystals, certain metals, types of precious stones and even portions of nature to hold the arcane powers. Some items they buried deep, and some they left in plain sight. Some elements chosen were of the most beautiful in the world and some were as plain as a seed of grass. Yet deep within each of these items they infused an Arcane power that could be triggered simply by using the right catalyst (word, motion or element) required. When the time was right for pandemonium to be released into the world, the gods of Chaos whispered the secrets to the inhabitants of Ringworld.
The gods took on avatars in forms like the inhabitants themselves. To the inhabitants of light, they appeared just slightly me glorious. To the inhabitants of darkness, they appeared slightly more powerful. To both, they sowed the seeds of fear and jealousy claiming that the other side will soon start a war. To both, they gave the solution on how to protect, and if necessary, how to strike first before the other should strike. The gods of Chaos simply provided the tools and a few half-truths to stir the imaginations of both sides.
After the war started, the gods of Chaos provided more spells and pointed the inhabitants of the ring to deeper and more powerful elements that could be tapped to release greater magic to protect themselves and destroy their enemies. The inhabitants, blinded by fear and hatred, were all too eager to escalate. The avatars of the gods left and enjoyed the results of their work. Once the inhabitants understood the basic principles and how to make things more powerful, they continued down the path that the gods of Chaos wanted.
The "War that changed everything" culminated in a massive battle of powerful magic users. There was an immense loss of life, destruction of land and a release of power so strong it shifted the ring from its normal orbit. Portions of the ring now periodically enter the atmosphere of the planet. In the age after the war, arcane magic was banned in some kingdoms, but permitted in others. Some spells are commonplace, but some spells have been hidden in dark places, protected, and known only to a very few.
