The creation of the Ring World

When the worlds were created, the gods decided to make one world more beautiful and spectacular than all the others. So proud of their work, they created a ring around the planet from which the beauty could be viewed. The Ring adorning the planet was itself a paradise of beauty with vast lands of lush gardens, beautiful hills, thick forests, and crystal-clear seas from which all sorts of life was created to gaze upon and enjoy the world of beauty.
During the first age, some of the gods dwelt upon the ring amongst the mortal life they created. But, as with all creation, some compromises were made. The Dark gods demanded a portion of the ring and to prevent yet another war, an agreement was reached. While one side of the ring was in perpetual light, the Dark gods were granted free reign to populate the other side of the ring. Several miles of stone and dirt in between the surfaces of the rings and harsh cold mountains at the outer rim seemed enough to separate them (for a while.)
As is their way, the gods moved on, leaving the creatures to enjoy the world. The mining folk found that the stone in the ring were rich with metals and gems. The tree folk found that the forests were rich with abundant life.
The Dark folk living on the dark side of the ring too found food sweeter than they ever knew existed (on the light side.) After discovering tunnels and passages through the rings, they found their way to the light side, and there they found an abundance of succulent meat to feast upon.
Civilizations grew and loose alliances were formed to protect the lands of the Light from the enemies from the Dark. Alliances were formed on the Dark side where they viewed the people of the light to be selfish and greedy. Dark raiding parties were sent to the light side for the resources they had horded.
While the inhabitants of Darkness and Light had their skirmishes, neither side new of the growing threats the Outcast Chaotic gods had placed on the main planet. The Outcast gods of chaos introduced a source of magical power to both the Dark and the Light creatures. The peoples did not know the extent of the power of the magic they were given, but the gods of chaos did.
Both sides increased their magical power and strength creating devastating spells and counter spells. They harnessed powers beyond their understanding. Pride, arrogance and greed corrupted the minds of both sides and led to a war that changed everything. After the war, the ring had shifted. It no longer perfectly circled the planet. Instead, once every year a portion of the ring sinks into the atmosphere of the large planet. The few that survive “the mingling” speak of massive creatures with wings larger than a ship's sail.
