Empires of the Ring

The world was created with the best of intentions, neatly packed and primed and packaged. From dust collected over galaxies and light condensed to sound - the world was made as sure as you or I. What the Makers (or Dreamers, or Fornicators, whatever you choose to call them) could not imagine was that their power had limits.   The Great Center, the dynamo that spun the world on it's axis, pushed against an opposing force - a Ring. The Great Ring encircled the world, creating an opposing force against the Great Center and stabilized the position and gravity of the planet below.   At the dawn of a new day, if one were to be sitting on the edge of the Great Ring and they happened to look down at the right moment, that one would see a light crackle on the surface of the perfect world; a blemish on the face of the sublime. Erupting from this crackle came first a trickle, then a stream, then a deluge of light - the Great Center reaching out of it's tomb. On the other side of the perfect world, a twin deluge of light erupted and soon led to a splitting crackle of fire, shattering the surface of the planet below.   The Ring swung in a desperate cosmic pirouette attempting to balance with the Great Center, colliding with the fracturing surface, and dismantling the union of perfection. The Ring now free-floated around the world, devoid of function while the cracked planet held it's form.   Where once there was union now lay chaos. The loss of the functioning Ring caused the planet to sway out of it's gravitational center, the power of the core leaked out onto the surface in a web like maze of energy. Forced from their homes, the inhabitants on the ground sought refuge on the Ring.   Uprooted cities were reformed on the Ring, crops were established clinging to the edge of oblivion, life was sustained and born, grew old, died, and was born anew over countless generations until the wonderous technologies which had produced the planet originally were forgotten; only remembered now as superstition and Magic. New empires of the Ring were born, new settlements were formed, weapons forged and wars were fought - by sword, and spear, by sailing ships cascading off of the chaotic energy spewing from the Great Center. Somewhere on the Ring are remains of the ancient planet Makers, the key to returning to the planet's surface... and to stabilizing the Great Center making the planet able to sustain life again.    To all those now living on the edge, all that remained was to keep their grip. When not fighting each other, creatures mutated by the raw power of the Great Center fought the settlers for resources. Mysterious natives of the Ring sought to sabotage and destroy the invading survivors, battling in the shadows to regain control of their home.
