Concerning Ring World

Formation

Many legends abound of the formation of the Ring World. Various religions claim to understand the nature of what took place and declare it to be such and such or this and that. Most are wrong. This is the true tale of how the Ring World came to be. It started as a wonderful enterprise.   Thados, the god of the heavens, Lord of life, and master of destiny decided to create the perfect world upon which his beloved children might grow and flourish. Thados understood the need for a self-sustaining world; one that didn't need his guiding hand for all eternity. He knew he would depart the realms of the living in time, and wanted his world to continue on. As he was clever and wise he built into his world marvellous forces of liquid rock, spinning around a central dynamo infused with a piece of his soul. He made his world perfect. Life sprung up and for the entire age, all was good.   Then Dyrokus saw what had been made. She was jealous and sought to make her own world; better than Thados' one. He grew envious of her, Dyrokus had knowledge, wisdom, and patience as her forces. The planet she made was beyond perfect. The people of Thados planet thrived, but the people of Dyrokus' world excelled. In a rage, Thados threw a bolt of energy at Dyrokus' world. It exploded into a thousand upon thousand pieces. When he saw what he had done he was ashamed. Her perfect world was no more. Yet she was not. She drew the pieces together and wound them around Thados' world.   The piece of her spirit contained within the rings ensured her people could continue living. However, what neither Thados nor Dyrokus knew was that in combining their spirits together to form Ring World, they have created an offspring between the rings and the planet. Kadam was neither wise nor living but an imitation of both, blind to morality. He was able to give the unliving life, and to stop the life within the living, but could not make a living thing from anything. He great angry and set the dynamo of Thados' planet spinning erratically.   This tore great rifts across the planet's surface, killing many who lived there. In despair, Thados and Dyrokus moved some peoples from the planet to the rings, but not all would leave. The actions of Kadam also marked the Rings locking in place and becoming permanently positioned either in the light or out of it. But time had run out for Dyrokus and Thados - they were needed elsewhere. Kadam remained. Unable to change what he had done, he now lives in the dynamo.

The Rings

Whatever caused the rings to form there are some hard truths about living on Ring World. The rings - there are six, each about one hundred and twenty miles wide and about five miles thick. The first ring is separated from the planet by a distance of 1.4 miles. The second ring is separate from the first by 500 yards. The third and fourth rings have just under 700 yards between them, and then the fifth ring is another mile above that. The sixth ring is a mile and a quarter beyond. It is said that on the night side of the sixth, it gets so cold your breath freezes inside your lungs.   Each ring has various inhabitants that live on the fractured pieces of rock that slowly orbit the planet below. Because of being locked to the planet, the rings are either facing the suns or hidden in the shadow of the planet. The difference is literally night and day.   Life on the ring is almost like living on the planet's surface used to be. Temperate valleys and snow-covered mountains stretch over large chunks of islands. Water is mainly gathered by the mountains passing through the atmosphere condensing water from the air. This water eventually pours over the edge and rains down upon the planet. Crops, cities, and inter-ring and island travel is a common sight, though too expensive for many folks to afford.

The planet

The surface is a shattered and broken place of forgotten cities, lost empires, and monsters. Strange geothermal gasses, magma flows, and violent electrical storms seem to plague the planet's surface. There are rumors of beings who live on the planet although for most it is seen as a dark warning about abusing magic and not paying respect to the gods.
