The Celestine Royal Academy

Located in the Royal Quarter of Gran Veritas, the Celestine Royal Academy is the oldest and most prestigious school for magical learning. Its attendants and alumni are of extraordinary talent, noble pedigree, or just really, really rich.   Students range from secondary-school age to undergraduates and postgraduate studies. The Academy exclusively teaches magic, its applications and how to use it responsibly in the wider world. Subjects include Magical self-defence, Arcane History, Restoration and Healing studies, and so on. The academy’s school fees are rather expensive, but it is generous with scholarships to those who have a keen knack for magic.

School Subjects

At the Academy there are no dedicated classes to Divination, Evocation and so on-- the subjects are based on the practical application of magic rather than their classification, designed to help students find their passion and pursue a rewarding career. Secondary-level students are taught all subjects in their early years before narrowing to specific electives, which then inform their choice of major in their university years. Postgraduate students pursue higher level learning under the watchful eye of the Orrery, often undertaking in years-long research projects.   The uniforms worn at the Academy are equal in colour and design up until university years, where students begin wearing the colours associated with their degree.   The majors taught at Celestine Academy include:

Magical Innovation

Colour: Teal
Dean: ?
Innovation is the subject of creation, where students learn to take their existing knowledge of magic and use it to synthesize new tools. Artificing, Magical Sciences and Potions all fall under Innovation, as they all deal with the interplay of magical enchantments applied to mundane items. A relatively new major, it has drawn a bit of skepticism for its unconventional (as in, experimental) teaching methods.

Martial Spellcasting

Colour: Red
Dean: Prof. C. Guildenstern
The use of spells for combat and protection. Majors include Magical Self-Defence, War Casting or Arcane Security. Despite its name and reputation for drawing wizards with twitchy casting-fingers, this isn’t just a ‘learn to fight’ subject. It also involves learning magical policing protocols and its relevance in criminal law, magical forensics, and licensing.

Demonology

Colour: Green
Dean: ?
Interplanar entities, monsters and beasts, summoning, rituals, cults and black magic. Demonology deals with all of the above, and is not for the faint of heart. Demonology aims to teach students about the eldritch horrors of the unknown, how to identify them, and most importantly- how to defend yourself against them. As such, it goes hand-in-hand with Martial Spellcasting (often taken alongside Demonology as a double major).

History of Magic

Colour: Amber
Dean: Prof. Barnabus Worthington III
Exactly what it says on the tin. Magical History branches off into a wide variety of subjects: Runic Architecture, The Sundering, Ancient Religions, and so on. Talented magical historians are well-respected in Eternan culture, which places importance on recording the present for the people of the future.

Planar Astronomy

Colour: Blue
Dean: ?
Planar Astronomy deals with Astrology, study of the Planes, Divination, Astral Projection, and other subjects that teach the properties of the Planes and the movement of the stars. Interplanar travel was once possible in ancient times; now it is not, and many students of Planar Astronomy aim to delve into the mysteries of how and why.

Restoration

Colour: Magenta
Dean: Madam Mercy
Also known as Healing, Arcane Medicine, and Religious Studies. Restoration deals with the analysis and development of magical healing techniques, as well as their role in the wider world of modern medicine and clerical healing rituals. It is a challenging field, but most healing classes have plenty of practice subjects in the form of other students.

Spellmastery

Colour: Silver
Dean: Headmaster Magnus Wren
Spellmastery is arguably the most straightforward of all majors to describe: It’s about spells. How to channel them, how to analyse them in various forms, the intricacies in the various types of spells, and so on. Higher-level students may pursue Spellcrafting, a major dedicated to the creation of new spells.

History

The Academy was founded roughly 600 years ago by the Order of the Orrery, who dedicated their building and their members to teaching the new generation. The Academy building, formerly the Orrery headquarters, is a sprawling and centuries-old complex that spans part of the outer perimeter of Eterna Castle itself. It has its own towers and dungeons, and parts of the Academy connect directly to the Castle-- meaning a student wandering those areas may catch glimpses of Eterna’s royalty. But the most notable aspect of the Academy’s architecture is the ancient Kaleidoscope Orrery, a timeless clockwork representation of the Planes and the Order’s namesake.

(Un) Friendly Rivals

Much of the criticisms targeted at the Orrery-- as them being too political, or letting social problems get in the way of academia-- is also aimed at the Academy. Academy students are stereotyped as being stuck-up rich kids who take pointless standardized tests and learn useless degrees for cushy government jobs, not 'real' magic. So what is 'real' magic then? Chances are the loudest complaints against the Academy come from members and supporters of the Behenian Institute of Zaman, the other big magic school in Galoria and the Academy's biggest rival. Unlike the Academy, who teach magic in a wider and practical context, the Institute is made up of pure mathemagicians who study magic at its primal, fundamental levels.
