The Genie Wars

The massive destruction caused during the Divine Sundering released massive amounts of elemental energy on Resa. This energy coalesced into varoius mephits, genies, and elementals and changed those mortals exposed into genasi. While some elementals roamed the world alone, many of the genies gathered weaker elementals to their service. These kingdoms fought each other and raided the mortal settlements as they tried to rebuild.
These raids led the stronger settlements to send military forces to fight back. While these actions took care of the lower elementals, the stronger elementals and genies couldn't be quelled so easily. Parties were sent out in search of artifacts and magic that might aid them in these conflicts. Eventually sealing magic was used to trap these genies in lamps, rings, and other artifacts that allowed mortals to harness the genies' magic. While some were used by rulers and mages, many of these artifacts were hidden or lost.
