The Hell Knights

The Hell Knights are among the most fearsome and enigmatic entities in the Infernal Plane, embodiments of destruction and chaos crafted from the remains of the Core of Life itself. Their existence is a constant reminder of the plane's tragic origin, and their presence instills dread in demons and celestials alike. Numbering nine in total, the Hell Knights are the distilled essence of the Infernal Plane's malice and violence, with each representing a facet of the collective rage, despair, and corruption that defines the realm.   The creation of the Hell Knights was a catastrophic consequence of the Core of Protection's grief and vengeance following the death of its partner, the Core of Life. As the plane was engulfed in torment and despair, fragments of the Core of Life's essence remained, twisted and reanimated by the Infernal Core's malevolence. These fragments became the Hell Knights—beings of unparalleled power and single-minded purpose, designed not to rule but to destroy. They are neither fully demon nor deity but something in between, each one a terrifying amalgam of infernal energy and the remnants of their divine origins.   The Hell Knights are distinct from the demons and monstrosities of the Infernal Plane, operating outside the hierarchy imposed by the Tyrannical Concord. They answer to no one, not even the Tyrants, and their motives are driven by an insatiable desire to break the Divine Gate that confines the Infernal Plane. This singular goal makes them an existential threat to the multiverse, as their success would unleash an unending torrent of infernal beings upon all planes of existence. Their relentless pursuit of this objective often brings them into direct conflict with the Tyrants and other powerful entities of the Infernal Plane, who see the destruction of the gate as an unthinkable escalation.   Each Hell Knight is a unique force of nature, wielding abilities that defy comprehension and making them almost impossible to confront directly. Their power is immense, rivaling that of the Tyrants themselves, though they lack the political cunning and territorial ambitions of the Concord's rulers. What sets the Hell Knights apart is their indifference to the intricacies of infernal politics. They care nothing for alliances, territories, or demonic hierarchies, viewing all as either tools for their mission or obstacles to be destroyed.   The nine Hell Knights are categorized into two groups based on their fate and location. The first three, the Profanities—Despair, Greed, and Wrath—ascended beyond the Infernal Plane into Nirvana, where they have established domains as pseudo-deities. Their presence in Nirvana complicates the cosmological balance, as they work to undermine the Divine Gate from the other side through mortal cults and manipulation. Their ascension has sown distrust among the deities of Nirvana, who fear their growing influence but cannot directly intervene without violating the cosmic order.   The remaining six Hell Knights reside within the Infernal Plane, their destructive tendencies unchecked and their actions feared by all. These six represent other facets of sin and corruption, such as Pride, Envy, Sloth, Lust, Gluttony, and Cruelty. They wander the plane, their presence a herald of devastation. Entire cities and spheres have been abandoned upon learning that a Hell Knight is approaching, as their destructive power leaves nothing but ruin in their wake. Unlike the Profanities, these six are more direct in their methods, engaging in battles that reshape the landscape and slaughtering any who stand in their path.   The Hell Knights' independence makes them unpredictable and exceedingly dangerous. While their ultimate goal aligns with the Infernal Core's desire for revenge against the celestial and divine planes, their actions often conflict with the interests of the Tyrannical Concord. The Tyrants, for all their power, tread carefully around the Hell Knights, knowing that any confrontation could lead to mutual destruction. Even Rhim, the boogeyman of the Infernal Plane, avoids direct conflict with the Hell Knights, recognizing that their power could overwhelm even his relentless fury.   The Hell Knights are more than just weapons of destruction; they are symbols of the Infernal Plane's unending torment and rebellion. Their existence challenges the multiverse's attempts to impose order, serving as a constant reminder of the consequences of hubris and the fragile balance that holds the planes together. For mortals, the Hell Knights are figures of legend and horror, their names whispered in fear and reverence. For the denizens of the Infernal Plane, they are both a curse and a paradox—beings of unparalleled power whose actions threaten to destroy even the realm that birthed them.   In the grand tapestry of the Infernal Plane, the Hell Knights occupy a unique and terrifying position. They are not leaders, followers, or rulers but forces of pure chaos and destruction. Their presence shapes the actions of everyone around them, from the lowest Gruts to the mighty Tyrants, and their ultimate goal—breaking the Divine Gate—remains one of the greatest threats to the multiverse. Whether they succeed or fail, the Hell Knights ensure that the Infernal Plane will never be a place of stability, their legacy one of eternal conflict and unrelenting torment.
